Watford manager Walter Mazzarri to leave after final match of season on 15:03 - May 17 with 2493 views | simmo | It'll be another left field random appointment, probably from Italy. They do it every season where they change the manager/head coach, see how he gets on, if he's bad - sack him and replace, if he's good he gets until the end of the season. Seems to (kind of) work though, they have been safe all season, even allowing for the loss of form and loss of actual player in Ighalo. The infrastructure around the manager is sorted so they just bring in different people to see how they coach and use as the focal point to deal with the media, etc. Southampton will probably do the same thing for the same reasons [Post edited 17 May 2017 15:04]

Watford manager Walter Mazzarri to leave after final match of season on 15:09 - May 17 with 2472 views | hoof_hearted | The first sounds of boredom are coming from the Watford fans. Permanent relegation fight or mid-table mediocrity if things go really well. They can see the pattern emerging. Football starts at League 1 downwards. TV light entertainment is the top 2 divisions primary purpose.

Watford manager Walter Mazzarri to leave after final match of season on 15:47 - May 17 with 2384 views | Hunterhoop | Firstly, he's not the manager. He's the first team coach. Big difference. Secondly, this is how Watford structure things. They have consistency at board level, a clear approach, and consistency at DoF who, in the club, is known is the Chief. He runs all playing matters. He's far more involved in the first team than Les is. Thirdly, they've been very successful with this approach, as it gives them stability where it's needed, and depending on the next season's objective or performance of the first team coach, they can't get rid and getcsoneone in with a skillset to meet their objective. "Improve the brand of football". "Get promoted". "Stay up". "Consolidation". "Europe?". This is how they do things, and it's worked. It's just a very different approach to what English football fans are used to. They have stability, just at a different level to that whichever most football fans in this country can grasp. Fourthly, speak to Watford fans. They like the owners, the approach, and most of the coaches. They think it works. The English media just can't get their heads around it. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I didn't realise that other countries journalists never speculated/rejoiced/lied about manager appointments and sackings! They have definitely punched above their weight and until the second half of this season the fans were all happy. Most I know are now realising that more of the same uninspiring but functional (to try to keep the TV money) dross is coming every year until they go down. Which they will sooner or later.

But when did WE last have a sustained run of inspiring, entertaining football? And in what division, and position in the table, would we need to be for that to be the norm?

I guess parts of the Redknapp promotion season (all prejudice aside!). Before that the Warnock promotion season. The little run when we beat Spurs and Liverpool in the Premier League is the best I can think of in the top division recently. Proof positive that it is better to get relegated because promotion is the best chance of a proper success for most clubs. Reading fans were happier last night than Watford fans have been all season.

Heh, the monotony of being a middling to below-average Prem team - give it five years and they could go the way of Charlton. Give me the Championship any day, where anything is possible!

Watford manager Walter Mazzarri to leave after final match of season on 09:20 - May 18 with 1698 views | stevec | Don't know why clubs give out anything longer than a 2 year contract to managers. If they lose the players they're gone inside a year. If they're not very good they're gone inside a year. If they're successful, a bigger club will snatch them. Generally speaking, players tire of the same manager very quickly. The Watford situation is mostly down to a fall out with Deeney, the bigger the name in the squad, the quicker they go.

Apart from the obvious drawback of employing managers on 3 year contracts and then sacking them after a much shorter period. Is that the best way to run a club? Think not.

Well the three year contract was odd - Watford Rich at work said they were hoping this would be the one they could stick with long term but the players all hate him. Smoking in the dressing room at half time while berating them in Italian didn't win as many friends as he thought it might. But you can't argue the point about how Watford are set up. The year they got promoted they went through four managers in nine months.
