And think about how much better they were than what we have now?
Take the Laudrup side, with Michu (and later Bony), Chico and Ash at the back, Ben Davies, Pablo Hernandez...even the likes of Pozuelo (in cup games)...I think that if that side played our current side it wouldn't even be close...dominant in possession, shots and goals...
That was the good thing about having a mangafer like Laudrup - he wasn't going to settle for having no money to spend. If I recall correctly, HJ was very reluctant to spend the £ on Bony but Laudrup told him it was needed to compete in this league. Well the club made a nice profit off Bony in the end.
Still scratching my head at how anybody could have looked at such a struggling team last season and deduced that we didn't need to invest in the playing squad. Particularly in the year when sky money was so high and every other side was bound to spend it on their team. Just stupid beyond belief. And then sacking an experienced manager because the results must be down to him and not the championship standard players... Beyond frustrating as a fan.

By "anybody" you mean Huw? He had other more important (to him) matters on his mind.
Laudrup did not spend big - not sure he wanted Bony, and certainly not Ki. Laudrups best team did not include Bony anyway.

Well, he did break the club record when he signed Borja, and that could still work out.
But you're right - the Swansea team that beat Valencia would smash our current side.
Did'nt Laudrup want Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the asking price was a little high so went with Bony instead?
But we a shadow of the team of 3 years ago. This is what happens when you put in charge a rookie manager (Monk) and then he proceeds to tear apart the squad player by player and bring in players on the cheap.
Just call me JFK

We have been struggling since Laudrups first season. Anyone who forgets how we did after the Cup win has selective memory.( We had an entire year of shyt off Laudrup)We had one decent(results wise) season with Monk, but we have been watching dross for a while. Last season was torturous, this season even more so. This was always going to happen with the playing staff at our disposal.

No it won't.
Borja is yet another average player.
Not worth what we paid for him.
Erm, I'm not sure you can call him average given he scored 18 goals in La Liga last season playing for the smallest club in that league - and he was on loan!
I would suggest it's a recurring theme that good quality strikers end up looking shite at the Swans because my dead Nan would serve up better service than our midfield and wingers.

Peirre was one of three we wanted along with Bony and I think Gomis was the other one

I don't think the squad that finished in mid table in our first year was much better than the current one. But others have improved a lot more I suppose.

Brendan s squad in season 1 was no better than our current squad. But they played "our way" stuck to their principles and rode out any bad run of results.
If that squad had played the style we do now, they would have gone down.

If anyone wants to depress themselves can I suggest watching the 'Top 5 Goals' we've scored in the PL as posted by the official site today.
Goals 5 and 4 in particular make me want to weep.
Seems a long time ago doesn't it.
Observations - goal 4 shows how much pace Routledge has lost. Goal 1 makes me despair at what an unfit idiot Shelvey was/is - such a wasted talent that I wish was still here (the talent, not the idiot).

They probably wouldn't have got promoted in the first place.

See, I've always said that Brendan did an amazing job with what he had available but then I look at our defence now and both Rangel and Taylor are not the same players they were under Rodgers and are in or around the current starting side. Then we also had a prime Ashley Williams and Caulker was a very competent player too. Our back 4 is a shambles compared to what we had then. The fact that out defence has got worse after 5 seasons in the PL and all the money that comes with it is embarassing.
We also had a younger, faster Routledge, a prime Dyer and Siggy came along in January to bang the goals in. We have better strikers now but then Graham did a great job in our 1st season and he was supported by Sinclair who was also sharp. Let's not kid ourselves, we are a poorer team.
