Does anyone know who the huge warehouse being built off KIngsway (I think it is, or Queensway) is for?

No.

Then why do you expect other people / countries to buy goods from UK manufacturers when they can get them more cheaply elsewhere? Your decision not to buy at £90 is a microcosm of basic economics.

There's a serious point to be made about our "unilateral" compliance with legislation on climate change (which no other EU member state implements with the same degree of idiocy as we do) which causes the costs of UK manufacturing to be uncompetitive. The policy was implemented by Ed Miliband when he was Energy Secretary in 2008 in the Climate Change Act.

Most of our problems with the EU stem from Civil Servants implementing EU laws with a relish and vigour not seen in any of the other 27 countries. They get away with it because generally Ministers are too stupid to rein in their Departments and insist that some things get done at a "sometime, never"pace. It often seems that the UK is the only country that actually takes EU laws seriously - God knows why when places like France still owe us a fortune for all the Beef and Lamb they destroyed unnecessarily during the Foot and Mouth outbreak years ago and simply refuse to pay up. We have gone from being the "sick man of Europe" to being the "Tim, dim but nice" man of Europe at which Miliband was an expert exponent and as indeed are most of the current crop of PPE (Pish Poor at Everything) half-wit Ministers running round Whitehall.

PPE - I like that!

The wider point to all of this - going back to ming's first post in this thread - is that the reasons behind whether manufacturing or any other type of business succeeds or not in a complex world economy is never straightforward.

The case around implementing legislation on climate change simply illustrates the wider picture which governments of all persuasions have to take into account. Ming cites the issue of the high value of the pound during the 1980s. It's just so lazy and crass to "blame Thatcher" when she simply grasped the nettle of failing industries and showed more balls in doing so than any of her male colleagues, in order to refocus the economy into one which had a future.
