Mansion Tax 19:40 - Mar 28 with 9899 views | union_jack | Not sure how much sympathy i will get here, but Labour's proposal of a mansion tax is a cheap shot IMO. Have they not heard of 'asset rich, cash poor?'

Mansion Tax on 08:53 - Mar 29 by Dr_Winston | There is no such thing as a bedroom tax. There is however an end to people receiving a rent subsidy for a larger property than they need. Happy to clear that up for you. |
Shame that it's aimed at forcing people to leave homes they've rented for years and raised families in and move into smaller properties that don't exist in the numbers required to make the policy effective even isn't it? If you're looking for ill thought out and spiteful policies, forget the mansion tax and look no further than the "spare room subsidy". But let's not worry about those affected and instead concentrate our concern on the relative few who may be affected by living in a property worth millions. Poor dabs. How typically and unedifyingly Tory. [Post edited 29 Mar 2015 9:01]

Mansion Tax on 23:08 - Mar 28 by exiledclaseboy | As opposed to Tory policies where demonising the less fortunate and trite cliches about socialism are all the rage? Most of the bitterness in British politics lies on the right who remain convinced that everyone on benefits is taking the piss. The mansion tax is fine by me. It's symbolic and will affect few. I'm not about to shed tears for the asset rich/cash poor. As Private Partz has already pointed out, no ne has given a sh*t about the cash poor/asset poor over this past five years. So I'm not about to shed any tears for anyone who may be eligible to pay this gimmicky tax I'd also extend the franchise to 16 year olds. If you want up engage kids in their own futures, let them have a say. |
Spot on exiled. The Tory Boys are out in force today. Plus, if they live in Swansea, they will see the biggest employer (Public Sector) being hammered even further under the Cons. Talk about turkeys voting for Christmas..... [Post edited 29 Mar 2015 9:01]

There may very well be some people badly affected by the mansion tax (I hope there is some flexibility to cover such problems). But no such grey areas for the bedroom tax (which obviously does not affect people living in £2 m mansions). For example the lady who's son was murdered. She's now required to pay the tax because, surprise surprise, she's got a spare bedroom. As thoroughly sickening as it's possible to get.

Yep , I was fed up of families with 2 kids hogging 3 bedroom houses too. The government should've forcibly removed them from their homes and relocated them into one of the very few available 1 or 2 bed properties wherever they may be in the UK.

He's a Tory, try not to point out the inadequacies in their world view. It makes them think and that hurts them. It's cruel.

Yes there is. It's a colloquial name for the "Spare Room Subsidy".

I do enjoy how more or less the only defence from supporters of the policy is to quibble about what to call it. Morally bankrupt, whatever tag you want to put on it.

Let's be honest, you'd vehemently disagree with any defence for it, just as I'd vehemently disagree with any criticism. Based on what I've seen over the last five years (and the twelve before 2010) a lot of these measures were necessary and have been effective. Some not so much. You will no doubt disagree, which is entirely your right.

As someone who works in a deprived area with people who are affected by a lot of these measures (I am not affected personally and I'd guess you're not either), I'd be interested to hear exactly which you think were needed. I can say with absolute certainty that the changes to JSA (Work Programme and Universal Jobmatch) have been incredibly expensive abject failures. Universal Credit is on the way and I can promise you that it's going to be absolute carnage for many people.

Whilst it may be colloquial to people like yourself with more than one brain cell, I'd be interested to see the results of an IPSOS MORI poll to see how many people generally believe that it actually is a tax 😀

I know a number of 16 year olds who are far more politically aware than many of my own age. I we're going to restrict the franchise let's do it properly and introduce some kind of awareness test before we're allowed on the electoral register.

The thing is John, flexibility needs administration which in turn costs money. Not going to happen. A blanket approach will be applied. Babies and bath water.....
