A deeply sinister turn of events.... 15:51 - Feb 13 with 1682 viewsLohengrin

Orwell was right, he just had his timing slightly out. It's an obvious conclusion. For anybody who believes that they live in a free society, where the liberties that some one and a half million of their countrymen gave their lives (although I've long since come around to the idea that this was an expenditure based on lies) are cherished then the below will make for disquieting reading.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Someone should go to the effort of assembling a list of all police contact emails for all forces and then start a campaign for every reader of any satirical publication to spam them. They want details, give them lots! Must be thousands of Private Eye readers for starters. I'd include anyone who's watched Monty Python's Holy Grail or read the Beano as well.

At what point did the police think that was the right thing to do without any statutory rights to do so?

We need a written and codified constitution to protect us against this sort of over zealous state activity.

I'm not sure I would go as far as deeply sinister for this, just yet another example of the politically correct rubbish that comes out of the Police Service.

My favourite quote was from the Telegraph:

A police officer visited a local shop and post office in Corsham to make an assessment of community tensions and, if appropriate, encourage the newsagent's owner to be vigilant.

"During this conversation the officer requested information about subscribers to the Charlie Hebdo magazine.

"Wiltshire Police would like to apologise to the members of public who may be affected by this. Information relating to this specific incident has been permanently and securely disposed of."

I mean, who visits a local shop to make an assessment of community tensions? If only ECB was here to translate that for us.

We have common law, but it's being ignored in favour of govt's political legislation

Interesting but not surprising that the Police and Socialist Workers Party have basically merged into one.

The orthodox are always orthodox, regardless of the orthodoxy.

Don't start on the free man on the land/sovereign citizen stuff.

Statute supercedes common law because common law because that's how a modern state functions. Just because you say the right sequence of words doesn't mean that law doesn't apply to you.

It's fantastically amusing watching them try though. Some of them even try it in court. That never ends well.

If it actually worked then the British state would have crumbled by now. My strawman and I are quite happy with the concept of statute law.

It can be funny for a while but when they start advising people then it's a problem. People can have their lives ruined by this bollox.
