Saints Chase Davis From Glasgow Crisis Club Rangers Tuesday, 26th Jun 2012 09:58
Saints are rumoured to be chasing Steve Davis from Glasgow Rangers in what could be a free transfer as the gers players could be free agents.
Saints are alledgedly after Steve Davis from Glasgow Rangers and although Davis has a clause set in his contract that he can go for £1.6 million, it could be he might evoke a free agent clause due to the Ibrox clubs well documented financial problems.
However my first thoughts when seeing that we are chasing Davis is that we are signing no better than we already have, yes Davis has some Premier experience with both Aston Villa and Fulham, but that amounts to a little under 100 starts plus a few as sub, the last of these almost five years ago, just before joining Rangers in January 2008, initially on loan before a £3 million transfer.
In fairness i havent seen much of him, but on paper is he any better than any of the four options we currently have in central midfield, most Saints fans would agree that last season the midfield was a problem area in that there was rarely any continuity with the same four players featuring in consecutive games, sometimes because of injury, but in the main because Lallana apart none of the other players seemed to be that much better than the others, much of a muchness with good games often followed by average ones, the fact we had options did mean that we could rotate and try to keep it fresh, but it didnt give us continuity and often substitutions had to be made to change things.
What the centre of the park is calling out for is an experienced leader, Davis is a leader, captaining both Rangers and his Country, but is he truly the class player that we need or will he become just another option in an already crowded midfield that lacks that true quality we need.

We need someone or two in midfield who can contibute a half dozen or so goals a season, apart from Lallana nobody was capable of that and in the Prem it will be even more difficult. Can't decide about Guly's potential here to deliver this. Doesn't sound as though Davis is this sort of player?

We do need a leader on the pitch as well (can't think who it would be at present squad levels)...would Davis be a candidate for this?

He is exactly what we need. Not sure where you found the paper that sayys he is no better than what we have. Davis was SPFA Player of the Year in 2010 (OK I know you don't have to be mch good to win an award in Scotland). Most important asset is that he has been an effectve captain as Rangers have won severa trophies. How many times last season did you say the team needed leadership? He is genuinely keen to play here so there is every chance ths will happen. Rumour is that we are closer to signing a goalkeeper (yes, that one!) and this will happen first.

If a player is free or cheap, that is a bonus, but only sign him if he is better than what we already have. I'm not sure that is the case.

I think Davis would be a great signing for us. Admittedly the SPL isn't exactly a hallmark of quality football, but all the same I think he'll bring some of the leadership we'll need next year. As much as I like him, I don't think Hammond will be able to cut it at this level, and Davis certainly has a point or two to prove. On another note, I hate to feel the need to say this but would you mind using more individual sentences in articles? The actual content/wording is fine but one sentence per paragraph is pretty exhausting to read sometimes. For shorter articles like this it's ok, but there were some long ones this season that were pretty hard work!

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process.
