And breathe... - Simon Dorset's annual deep dive into the accounts
at 21:59 26 Feb 2025

As per last para
Wasn't that the philosophy last Summer.
Nardi is 30, Celar 25 but all the others are early 20s or less.
Whether we can develop and sell is another matter. Especially if looking for £5M fees

Daniel Bennie

Just helped Aussie U20s to Asia Cup Final after beating Japan 2-0; Bennie played all 90 as a defender.
Jaylan Pearman got 1 of the goals. I think we have a pre-contract agreement to sign him from Perth Glory when his contract expires in June.

If you need to get a committee to decide something, you should ensure an odd number of people.......

And 3 is too many.

I'm cautiously optimistic but that post nails it. If we lose 6 defenders, 2 loans and 4 OOC, then we have a major rebuild to come.
But if we resign Dunne and Cook, and some more of the youngsters (Bennie, Sutton, Tuck) progress then we'll have as good a chance as the teams currently 5th-15th.

I realised it was young, but hadn't appreciated it was quite so young.
Is the Youth set up prioritising the PL Cup on Friday. If so, expect the return of Murphy, Talla, Sutton, Petrie, etc

I hope you're wrong on the OOC players. Can we really afford to lose 6 defenders, 2 experienced midfield players and our most prolific striker?

I suspect Dunne will be offered a deal,. So will Cook and Frey, but on less money than currently. Will any of them accept?
The others, Fox, Paal, Andersen, Colback could be released, making a big dent in wage bill.

I anticipated changes but the lineup would be young for U18s, let alone U21. Leon Scarlett, signed from Arsenal in January is 15.

Driving in France 🇫🇷
at 20:01 25 Feb 2025

As 1 of our French residents, apart from driving on the right, you should take high vis jackets, a warning triangle, a copy of your insurance and vehicle reg docs. Breathalyser kits came in a few years back but I've never carried one.
As others have said, motorways are excellent, but tolled. Be a good idea to get a tag for the windscreen. Saves time at les gares peage.
Mway speed limits generally 130km/h (76 moh, i think). National speed limit is 80, but its 50 in towns. Town name is a rectangular sign with a red surround. Leaving the town there should be a sign with a line through it. Any alternative limits will be signposted. Speed cameras are widely used, but there's often a warning 500m before.

Drop me a DM if you need more.

The DS play tonight. I wonder if Dillon will get a start.
Selection could be interesting. Adjety-Brew, Salamon, Leahy and McDowell are all out on loan and I'm not sure what they'll learn about Petrie and Sutton as they scored 3 and 2 against Swansea last time out.

As you say, heading in the right direction. The standout for me is that wages are still running at 82% of income. That's far too high.

If it doesn't include the improved TV deal, then the situation should be even better for 24/25.

Averages out at £133K per employee.
I bet none of the first team squad are on less than double that average. giving them a MINIMUM £5K per week. Plenty will be on double that.

That's why calls to increase capacity fall on deaf ears. Of course, we need to find ways of generating more income, but the footprint of the ground means little can be done at LR.

The quickest way is through transfer dealing. We have to get recruitment, player development and selling at maximum values - none of which have been great since Eze. Nor a long time before.

There is a fair bit of over-analysis and hand-wringing, even for a message board like this.
We are a mid table Championship side who went to a hostile ground where the home team have a good record, and we didn't play well. Sh1t happens.

Sure, we will make changes in the Summer. We may lose players (defenders?) we'd like to keep. But I don't think, necessarily, that we are that far away from play off challengers. Not this season, though.

As frequently alleged, Cook, Colback and Frey, all of whom are out of contract in the Summer, are the big earners. It gives us the chance to cut the wage bill. But, at what cost?

I once watched 5 minutes of Big Brother. An hour of my life, I'll never get back.

Consequently, all the "reality" TV is dead to me.

I thought we descended to Portsmouth tactics and quality. Surprise, surprise, they were better at it than we were. V poor quality game. Hard to think of any of our side who played that well.

A new, bigger ground could increase the revenue from the football side. However the ability to use the ground AND facilities a lot more than 25-30 times per year would also help. Provided the extra income isn't swallowed by player/agent demands.
Sadly, even if we could find a suitable, affordable site, it would take 2 years from conception to usage.
The club is starting to extract retur s from the training ground but still has a way to go.

It remains that selling players for a profit would be a real game changer. See how Brentford did it.

Unusual to see the winning side outscored 3 tries to 1. If Russell had kicked the conversion the post match comments would have been very different.
I'm far from convinced by the England back line. Slade has always flattered and the wingers need to get in the game more than they did.

Really good finish. Pity, his primary job, defending, didn't go nearly as well.
