It’s a tricky situation with so many players OOC or on loan. I would expect the senior players who know they will be here next season to call out the slackers but who played last night from that category ? Off the top of my head that would be Chair, which limits the impact. Add to the mix that most players don’t think they are playing for anything (forget pride) and/or protecting themselves and it rapidly becomes a shitshow. My concern is that the manager ends up thinking the same and when someone waves a wad of cash at him, he starts thinking that a move is a good idea too. The three Rs of recruitment, retention and rehab have a lot of work to do otherwise it’ll roll into next season as well if we are not careful. |

Playing football seems to be a side gig for some these days. |

Good stuff - great wine and food, good value for money, amazing mix of people, good weather. Scenery is amazing, just think of the pictures from Newlands. Vineyards are great day trips from Cape Town. Bad stuff - you will probably experience some form of petty theft or fraud if you are not wary, especially in the evening. Don’t rent a nice car - it will draw attention in the cities if new and shiny. Get secure parking. Taxis at night are a better idea, although avoid the mad taxi minibuses like the plague !!! Don’t let your credit card leave your sight in a restaurant or bar, they’ll clone or use it in a couple of minutes. Some precautions - tell your bank you are going, they can add a flag on your cards. Get some good insurance that covers specifically covers SA by name. Check that the hotels have good security (it makes a big difference, especially in places like Sandton, Jo’burg. Advice It’s a big place and flying into one airport and back from another might be better if you go north to southbound vice versa. Jo’burg to Kruger is another internal flight to consider subject to budget. Personal experience is that I could live without another trip to Jo’burg but pretty much everywhere else out of the regularly visited places is worth it. I’d probably do Newlands and Durban for the cricket because of the environment and all the other activities you can do around the game (in case we call it in again !). You’ll have the trip of a lifetime hopefully and will almost certainly want to go back or visit one of the other neighbouring countries for an another level of adventure. |

Just as long as we don’t put Ashby in at RB, I’d love to see it for 45mins+ |

I had assumed that EFL teams are coached to play out from the back because the coaches sometimes get better jobs for implementing the system. The same with the 4:2:3:1 approach. It might not work with the players you have but you may be moving on to a team that needs that approach and therefore you become more marketable as a coach. Exacerbated by owners and CEOs who are clearly trying to find players for this systems so they can sell them to a bigger club. Round pegs in round holes - Ka’ching. Not unique to football. We see this everyday at work too - people who didn’t give a shit about ESG and climate yesterday who claim to be an expert today so they get a promotion or a role with another employer. |

Too soon for another thread covering midweek, let alone next season. Seriously, where do you go in terms of selection in the next game after this one ? Add Dembele and go for the shortest average height awards ? There’s clearly an agenda coming out in public now and it’s not a good look for anyone. I guess the ‘chicken children’ are ‘manifesting’ it somewhere else but it felt like a dogleg in the wrong direction today for this boomer. |

That selection was as bad as the FA Cup towel throw. And whilst Alfie may not be the best option, when you are the only striker option and still not selected ahead of non strikers, I would expect confidence to be low. As for Smyth, he’d a least have had a go on the wing. Yang did nothing worth keeping him on for - not for us or Spurs, who he is contracted to. Either someone’s sending childish messages or that was a cock up. Possibly both but at this stage of the day, a beer or five may be the next best, bad decision. |
