Match thread Halifax Town
at 22:46 19 Feb 2025

His runs are a joy to watch at a time when there’s not much else joyful about in the last third. If anything he’s getting better year on year with his movement and it’s getting ridiculous how little he’s being used.

There was one run tonight that should have won us the game, but Barlow didn’t get his head up and went in the opposite direction.

We’re meandering towards the end of the season right now. The manager has to change that, pressure is on. Big time.

Once more, despite not disagreeing with so much of what is being said, the “winning mentality” aspect has to be looked at with facts applied.

We have won almost half of our games (48%). Only four teams in the division have a better win percentage. Gateshead and Halifax have won one more game having played four more than us. Oldham have won two more games having played five times extra.

Our issue, where having the recruits in the areas identified may help, is not turning losses into draws. We need to get better results, full stop.

In the interest of fairness, the Halifax home game was a great example of us being able to find a way to win when the other team was probably better. Defended well, went direct when required and battled throughout to secure the points.

Let’s not rewrite history again because if we’d produced a similar display against Oldham we might have got something from that game.

Fitz’s post covers most of the issues - can’t work out why we haven’t added players in midfield and attack.

Here’s a trade off we’d probably all take:

Dale to drop to 12th if Sutton, Hartlepool, Southend and Solihull Moors all win tomorrow night. We’d prefer the last two not to get three points but if it means a chaos theory win in the main, it’s actually a decent set of results.

It’s not just Dale who have priority windows! This was brought up at the forum by a supporter to ensure season ticket holders get priority for some games - they have.therefore the club have listened.

The digitally challenged will still need to take a trip to the ground to get a ticket or have to queue before the game at the ticket office. Queues that would be much larger if those in the ticket office have to spend extra time taking the seat details from a ST holder. They can also ring the club, it’s in the story.

The club are not making things difficult, as you note I will call out issues and attitude when it needs to improve. In this case it’s a total non-issue as it’s a recognised process that has existed previously with no problems at all.

The argument about the ability of those at the club is of course one we all have showed interest in and offered opinion on.

For some reason, a point made about the priority window for season ticket holders has now been forgotten about. Probably because it was proven to be a non-issue.

Two different issues. The season ticket priority window is fine, if anything the bureaucracy around that protects their interests.

Other initiatives? Valid points for a lot of games but also worth considering that as it’s a cup competition we would presumably be splitting the gate with the away club and would require their agreement when ticket offers are discussed? ie/eg we’d have to offer free entry to their season ticket holders too.

That story about the Altrincham tickets appeared on Wednesday this week I think, if it was earlier my mistake. That means season ticket holders have had a priority window of a week, which is perfectly acceptable and in line with most ticketing processes.

All for constructive criticism of mistakes the club makes - but what exactly have they done wrong in this instance?

Earlier in the season we had far too many wide players who weren’t featuring. Most of those who were making up the numbers have now gone out on loan or left. Dennis has also gone.

There has to be significant efforts to try and bring in a midfielder and striker. The former to allow us to change formation or give Gilmour/East a rest. The latter to offer a different option.

That and the pitch will determine our season. Again, Wednesday is huge. Can we can get someone in before then?

Is that Terry Dolan at 22 seconds in?

Similar happened last season at this stage too. It is indeed baffling and another reason why McNulty brings pressure on himself.

I think we’ve got four games against the teams above us, will probably need to win three of them. Wednesday is probably the biggest match of McNulty’s reign.

Of course not, but it creates a solid base to start from. As you say, they have an interview stage and a proper application process which will help achieve the aims. We can only see how things play out, but this is far more professional approach than has been seen previously.

On your point about fans forums, irrespective of this change, they’ll still have a place as it allows all interested fans the chance to meet with the club’s board/manager. Tradition is good too!

It says in the article about how they’re looking to bring a wide representation of the fanbase including, for example, a “Sandy Lane Stand Season Ticket Holder. A young supporter (18-21) who is a regular in the Sandy.”

https://rochdaleafc.co.uk/cab-explained/

The best thing about this is it has a clear structure of how it works, moving away from the inconsistencies of those the Trust/Club have had in place. These have floundered for far too many years but hopefully we will now see real positive change.

We as a club do, you or any other individual supporter doesn’t have to.

Unless I missed it, there was no particular attention given to his goal against Northampton in 2023 which would have been his 130th strike (I think!) to beat the record of games in competitions which don’t include u21 sides.

Sad news. A thorn in Dale’s side over the years and I think we were linked with signing him at one stage.

How’s Jim actually performing?

Not about cutting it how I like, simply illustrating the stats this season. For example, since Novemberwe have gained 16 points from ten games, so the form has indeed dropped slightly since earlier on in the campaign but still play-off level form.

Not wanting to be right about anything - as stated, the issues and concerns are very valid - but we can’t use stats to support one argument without looking at others that might offer an alternative view.

The averages, if they don’t lie, say that McNulty has improved season on season and he has a side that averages enough points a game this campaign to make the top seven.
Right now, looking at our form and how we have structured our squad, I’d put averages and stats aside and worry more about whether we can address the problems.

League win percentage this season: 50%

Points per game this season: 1.65.

Which would see us end up on 76 points.

The debates around the manager’s tactics and selections are valid. The concerns are getting greater too. But the stats show a visible improvement year on year.

Yeah the record breaking goal was against Salford in a league game, having, ironically scored against the same team the previous month in the EFL Trophy.

There were also other goals in the Trophy after they let in u21 teams, including one against Sunderland u21s.

Then we’d have to wipe out his strikes in the EFL Trophy, making his much celebrated record breaking goal against Salford a non-event.

It’d upset Ethan Brierley too.

No, that’s the issue since day one. If the NL couldn’t see a problem with a team who wear blue having a black away kit and a dark grey third kit in a league containing ourselves and Southend, then it illustrates a lack of concern on their part.
