The Northam End being given wholly to Saints supporters has not been a success'

Nothing to do with this, its because the football has been awful,we have won 1 game(1-0) and lost 10,9 goals for and 33 against.

Ridiculous to say its because fans cant get the atmosphere going because they aren't near the away fans. The way the team has performed this season would have drained most fans and its to their credit they have turned up in good numbers.

You wouldn't hear so much from the away fans if we had won more games and you would have heard more from the ground if that was the case. Of course you should support your team win or lose but look at those stats, their shocking, plus some of the defeats have been humiliating,Spurs 5-0 up at half time, losing to Brentford 5-0 and Burnley 1-0 in a FA Cup tie .

Whilst a resident of the Northam and have been since the ground was opened, I much preferred it when the away fans were alongside. Since the Red Wall was introduced it is like the whole stand has been infiltrated by brainless kids. I mean, case in example, our lot singing about there being only one South Cosst Derby. Chaps, we know Pompey are the rivals, so why the need to air such a song whilst we are playing Bournemouth!?!? Surely you are stoking something not there.

I think with time things will sort themselves out on the atmosphere side as equilibrium takes place with fans of the old Itchen corner / Northam striving to move ends. Once there are a few taking up residence next to the away fans it should help.

Re: the silence from the hierachy, we have often said (and has been well documented on articles here to be fair) that we don’t want constant feeds of news or interviews from the board as they need to take valuable time running the place, however the silence really is deafening. I mean, by all accounts Dragan was the one beating down the door to tell Martin he was sacked yet it’s here say. For me it’s simple, Dragan is the major shareholder so needs to stand up and be counted.

Whilst we can argue or disagree on the merits or not of Cortese / Liebherr, at least we had a strategy. We were told the squad / first team would be built around getting homegrown, English players who came through the ranks playing as the core of the team (and by Christ we were getting there). If Sport Republic are here using the place as a cash cow then just tell us that, but don’t assume we are all mugs and will put up with it.

What is their strategy for getting us back up (if they even desire that) next year?

I love Saints but don’t assume I will be led like a sheep and take the support as guaranteed.

In all honesty 73, looking at the ilk of those who attend the forums and the questions that often leave their mouths it’s probably a good thing.

The Red Wall is built, now what about expanding the ground to a 745,000 all seater capacity……

I started in the Northam when we moved from the Dell, I was Archers block five at the Dell and most around me agreed the Northam was the obvious choice to move to.

I gave up on the Northam a few years back because the newer/younger lot that had moved that absolutely did my head in, it was all performative social media b*llocks and bouncing around trying to look like something they're not.

The move to the Itchen North meant it felt far more like the old Dell crowd, but that then got ruined by the same nippers i'd move to escape moved over and turned the Itchen North into the Northam-Lite/a creche.

This season we moved back to the Northam, partly because we wanted to stand, mostly because it was so much cheaper, but like you say it's nigh on unbearable with the brain dead kids.

I've finally lost patience now, the songs about players c*cks, the celebration of going down, the stupid songs that we mocked the skates for in the past like pretending to celebrate goals, and don't get me started on the god awful Liverpool song that gets sung every five minutes.

My group are planning on moving next season - probably to the chapel by the away fans - but honestly i don't really care where we move so long as i'm not in the Northam anymore.

I'm also a lot more cynical about the "red wall", i don't believe that it was done to improve atmosphere, I think it was done to reduce policing costs and allow the club to get more money making schemes like the gulags and champagne bar into the ground.

If the club had actually wanted a better atmosphere they'd have either kept the away fans by the Northam, or they'd have put in safe standing to the back few rows of the chapel as well as the Northam.

I'm confused. You used to say having the away fans in the Northam hindered the home support and enhanced the away side's chances of winning.

Now it's become clear to pretty much everyone it's had a detrimental effect and we get beaten every week, you seem to be saying the team need to perform in the first place for the fans to create an atmosphere. What happened to the extra 10-15 points a season a dedicated home end would bring us? We could do with a few of those...

Disagree about the atmosphere.
From where I'm sat nearer the centre of the Itchen stand the Northam is definitely louder than previous seasons and a he'll of alot better now the away fans are tucked out of the way in the corner.
Considering how awful the team is I've been surprised at the fans have kept singing tbh.

The endless digs at the younger fans is I guess understandable as most on here including myself are well into middle age or older and as we know with our grandparents and parents ..aint nothing like the good old days.

Also yes we've copied Liverpool with the Allez song....everyone copies everyone else and that's always been the case going back over the decades .

I always wanted Saints fans to have a home end, not particularly fussed where the away fans went.
The detrimental affect is not having our own end its being humiliated on a regular basis.

Inevitably, fans are starting to get fed up and will gradually stop going. We are all fed up of losing every game. If this continues next season, attendances will drop dramatically I suspect.

As for the Northam, both sides of the argument make valid points. It is definitely true that not being near the away fans dilutes the atmosphere. I can only give my own personal view, that being away from the away support makes things less interesting, boring even. I intend to move to the Chapel next season by the away fans.

Both sets of fans definitely used to bounce of each other, and the surging of fans etc did make the place more hostile. We now have the other extreme where the fans either side of the away support do absolutely nothing. They sit there in silence. However, of course it's true that if Saints were winning games, you would have a whole end of Saints fans singing and a much better atmosphere.

Ideally, having the standing section in the Chapel, with our noisiest fans still next to the away support would have been the best thing. But Frannies Tache is right. The club wanted the loud fans well away from the away fans to save on police costs and prevent any trouble.

Has there been any serious trouble at St.Marys?
I cant recall much if any.
Not like the Dell which was frequent most match days.

There were a lot of issues between the Itchen North and the away fans next to them in the Northam. They closed the Itchen North because of it. This meant lost revenue from closed sections and empty seats. They also had a lot of issues in Brittannia road where the away coaches used to park and the home fans from the Northam used to spill out onto the same road. Now, the away fans and coaches are well away from any home fans, and the home fans nearest them are the quiet ones. Things are much much calmer. Some might say that's a good thing, others not, as the atmosphere is much calmer. The club purposely encouraged the loud fans to buy the cheap standing tickets, the opposite end to the away support.

In the ground and directly outside not a huge amount, aside from the Itchen North and Northam chucking a few things at away fans inside the ground it's mostly posturing.

Directly outside - and aside from games against the skates - it's only been the odd bit of handbags on britannia road by the buses, and you'd have to go back to the cup game against Wolves in the mid 2000's for any real trouble close to the ground.

But that said away from st mary's we had a very active element up until probably this season, and also in league one/championship days we did too.

That stuff is mainly away from the police camera's though so you wouldn't see much of it in the ground itself.

Have to agree with you - I sit in the Itchen and when the Northam get going it’s good.

The only real issue is we (the fans)turn up week in week out being faced with yet another defeat add to that we really don’t have many songs , hence the Allez song get me sung over and over not just at home but away as well .

I find it strange that one of the arguments by those that want it to fail is there’s no away fans next to them when in reality most of the Notham couldn’t see them.

It’s funny how a lot of fans go on about what a great atmosphere the West Brom play off was - a game where we had 3/4 of the Notham not just the half we had for the majority of our games at St Mary’s since we moved .

I wonder what it would have been like if we had the whole end and I don’t think it would have been worse , in fact quite the opposite.

Win a few games , get some more songs and the end will be as good as any other “home end “

This is not the season to judge whether the Northam has worked or not. Are people really saying the atmosphere would’ve been better if we still had the old set up in this most dire of seasons?? In terms of needing to be next to the away fans to make noise, this only really applied to the Itchen as the Northam couldn’t really be seen or heard by the away fans and vice versa, and the Northam was in any case drowned out and insignificant in vocal support during matches. The Itchen North was also not influential on the setting the atmosphere around the ground and was also drowned out by larger away followings and people seem to forget it often felt like the away fans sucked the ball into the net when they were behind the goal. Lack of songs/stupid songs has been an issue for years and not a new phenomenon this season. When it’s got going the Northam has been louder than in the past and quite frankly there is a section of this board who never wanted it to happen (Nick included) and have been desperate to see it fail and tell everyone they were right. I’m middle aged too and I think some people of our age just can’t handle not setting fan culture/behaviour anymore. It’s not The 1990s anymore I’m afraid.

Yep completely agree. I too sit in the Itchen and the noise from the saints fans from the Northam is louder than it’s ever been . I also don’t get the problem with the Alez alez song. That song can be heard by many fans from different teams and the fact is most football songs are sung by fans all over the country but they put their own version on it and football songs have been like that for as long as I can remember.

We just need more songs. Some fans get together and work on it or post songs online . Man Utd have an array of songs and their away support has always been good . Yet again it boils down to how much you want it .

My issue isn't volume it's quality.

I don't think I can ever remember a time where our song sheet has been so embarrassing, we literally have two songs about players c*cks and people are more likely to sing things like "how sh*t must you be" or "lets pretend we scored a goal" so they can laugh like kids who've just discovered laughing gas, than support the team.

Add to that the songs about the skates every five minutes - i swear we sing about pompey more than they do - and it just sucks all the enjoyment out of it.

That's the main reason i want to move to be honest, plus I actually want to watch the game (crazy i know)

I guess it depends where you are in the ground. If you're in the Itchen or Kingsland North, surely it's inevitable it'll sound louder than last season. I'm also sure over time the noise levels will improve when the various sections learn to sing in unison.

However, from a personal point of view, I'll hold my hands up and say I made a massive mistake moving there from the Kingsland North. The Northam is full of gimps...not everyone of course, but a significant percentage. I don't want to sit in silence through games; I like to get involved and help create an atmosphere, but I honestly find it torture being surrounded by that type of fan. I could let the Allez Allez Allez song slide if it was sung once or twice, but it must get a run out 10-15 times a game. The "massive cock" ditty is horrific, then you've got bellends still signing about battering Pompey 4-0 at home. I can accept I'm a miserable old bastard now and that times change, but there's very few songs someone "normal" can or would want to join in with.

The club conned many of us into moving there this season by announcing significant price increases in all other parts of the ground, but not releasing what they'd be until the Northam had nearly completely sold out. There was also the threat that any form of standing in other parts of the ground would not be tolerated. Their plan worked, but there's no way I'm doing another season in there.
