It's just been on the news that school children in Scotland under the age of 12 will be banned from heading the ball in training but not in actual games. Is this the start of heading the ball becoming outlawed ? What would the game look like without heading ?

I've just read the opening post on this thread again which contains this

"It's just been on the news that school children in Scotland under the age of 12 will be banned from heading the ball IN TRAINING BUT NOT IN ACTUAL GAMES"..

It looks like its the teachers that have decided its perfectly safe to head the ball anytime you want except in training you can read into that when at school. What does the research have to say about this development, heading in training at school opposed to heading in a game one is safe one is not.

Just answer the question pioneer, or back out of this discussion with your tail between your legs

Edit: and in case you've forgotten, the question is: How do you demonstrate it's safe for children aged 12 or under to head a football without increased risk of dementia in later life, and without breaching ethical guidelines

Anecdotally, I've noticed a fair few professional footballers seem to have slight speech impediments. Coincidence?
As a partial solution for head protection, how about soft helmets as in rugby or amateur boxing ?

I noticed on Wikipedia that when Jeff Astle retired in 1977,he started up an industrial cleaning business and I`m quite surprised that nobody has brought this up (maybe they have, but I`ve missed it). Industrial cleaning means working with all sorts of hazardous substances/chemicals particularly back in 1977 because people who worked with them then wouldn`t have used protective clothing like they must do today. They probably didn`t use gloves, goggles, proper overalls or masks. This stuff can get into your system in many ways and doesn`t show up for years, sometimes decades causing all manner of life affecting illnesses in later life. I know because my brother was diagnosed with myeloma,a form of leukaemia when he was 54 and though he put up a great fight for nigh on ten years, passed away three years ago. One oncologist who treated him said, they could`t be certain as to why he got this cancer, but it was a sickness "probably due" to working with hazardous chemicals, which my brother had. He worked for over thirty years as a water treatment engineer, "It might be shit to you,but it`s my bread and butter",he used to say.
So,Jeff Astle died of dementia at a relatively early age,the coroner said continual heading of the old footballs was a major contributor, but I know working with industrial chemicals wouldn`t have been doing him or his workers any good at all.

I’m sure if his chemical business had been a contributing factor in his death, the Coroner would have said so. A neurosurgeon said his brain looked like a boxers brain, caused by repeated blows to the head. Not repeated exposure to chemicals, why are you so keen to debunk the ‘heading a ball is risky ‘argument?

Poll: Will you download and use the contract tracing App being launched by the Govt

I already stated the Coroner`s findings, based on the evidence that was given to him. There could`ve been other factors that brought about his rapid decline, maybe, maybe not. Maybe Astle was unlucky like my brother was, passing away at a relatively early age in the modern world. Of course heading the ball was risky in those days,so was working at Turner Brothers and we all know how many people died from working at that place.

I was reading the other day that aluminium being absorbed by cooking with aluminium pans is now being considered as a cause of dementia/brain damage.

I headed the ball a fair bit and worked at TBA for 6 years, maybe I should count my blessings.

That`s right Ming. I worked at a geothermal power station in NZ for nigh on thirty years and during that time I`ve worked with asbestos, both cladding and in gasket form, breathed in lots of silica dust, breathed in lots of lead based spray paint, though I did wear cheese cloth and as all us old blokes have done, breathed in copious amounts of cigarette smoke in countless pubs and clubs, top decks of buses, etc. I`m 71 now,I guess you`ll be about the same, one day no doubt all that crap I`ve inhaled will catch up with me and that`ll be it. Do I care? Not one bit,you can`t turn back the clock,I`ve had a fantastic life, got a lovely family, seen some great places and back in the day, went to some momentous football matches, far too many to mention over there. We`ve all made our own decisions,as did Jeff Astle,no good blaming someone else.

There was a bloke in Rochdale who wrote a book about that, years ago. Louis Blanc. He said in it that he "recovered" from dementia, by completely removing Aluminium from his life, after getting ill while he had a job selling pans. He also increased Magnesium intake, which counter acted the Aluminium. I knew him through cycling...in my honest opinion, he never fully recovered.

You've been a busy boy haven't you? I'm sure that's all very interesting, but how would you conduct a study to demonstrate that children aged 12 and under haven't an increased risk of dementia in later life through heading a football?

You haven't got an answer, have you?

Why? Because there isn't one

Accept you've been rumbled pioneer, demanding evidence where none can be obtained - at least not for another 50 years or so. It'll do you good, and it'll make you feel less bitter and it'll stop this nonsense which should've been stopped when i first posed the question

FFS D_A Can you point out where on this thread Pioneer demanded, suggested or implied research be conducted on under 12's heading a football? but don't let that stop you from demanding such also the only person you are running rings round is yourself be careful you don't disappear up your own ring while you are at it.

There is more than a touch of irony in you suggesting I am Pioneers spokesman while being D_A's apologist. As to your last point, through out this thread both you and D_A have raised straw man arguments to discredit anybody that disagrees with you.
