shameful - a great British engineering company with a proud history; no respect for tradition!

Not sure why anyone would call this PLC "family silver", it's earning per share have halved in 5 years to just 5p per share, It's share price had collapsed from £3.41 in Feb 2015 to £1.01in June of this year, a 10 year low. The offer from AI Convoy to buy the company has probably saved it. This company has been desperate for some proper management for the better part of a decade since the Cobham family sold it, maybe the new buyers can inject some money and some new management and turn it around by enabling it to get deeper involvement with the US military procurement and better deals globally.

Certainly, a lot of under-water shareholders will be pleased to see the buyout happen as prospects of ever getting back to £3 a share have looked increasingly poor. It looks like a good deal for the workers and the shareholders.

Business is business, this company was badly run and has met the fate it deserves. If the Hedge Fund can improve it, good luck to them. We worry too much about these poorly run businesses and ones which are being overrun by technology and spend too little time focused on making successes of the new emergent businesses that might replace them given some support and a fair wind.

The number of British inventions that have never been taken up in the UK is legion and many of the ones that have been turned into businesses have struggled for investment. Going forward post-Brexit, these attitudes now have to change and change quickly.

Always had a problem with investors not backing British inventions, too much short termism and risk aversion, no reason to suspect this will change post brexit

According to a stock market expert on the radio this asset stripping, sorry, hedge fund company haven't any previous experience of defence industry businesses. They specialise in moving in, sorting out what is the prime line of the business , flogging that off for a profit and ditching the rest.

In which case, why didn't the management do that already? Therein lies the problem we hang on to some businesses or some parts of businesses too long, way beyond their sell-by dates to the point where there is nothing much worth anything. The high streets were full of low margin, poor service retailers that ignored building an online presence and look at what happened. HMV - killed by downloads, Woolworths tried and failed to sell everything and did nothing very well, BHS, Debenhams, Dixons, MFI, Principles, C&A, Comet, JJB Sports, Tie Rack, Blockbuster, Phones 4U, Staples, even Poundworld, and on and on, all gone.
A new industrial age is upon us, in 5 years all new cars will be electric, Graphene will be in more or less everything, making things tougher, lighter and stronger. Every new house in less than 10 years will be battery-powered, roof tiles will be mini solar panels, shopping will be delivered in autonomous vans, no one will actually need to own a car, Buses and trains will be a thing of the past, Car parks will be empty brownfield sites. The national grid will be graphene enabled with no loss of power over 100s of miles. Even football shirts will have graphene enabled sensors printed into them as will bandages, pillows, floors, roads and thousands of other things. It's all happening right now and we either evolve or die.

I've been stock piling ties for years. I'll make a killing when they're no longer being made. On a serious note I've been interested in graphene ever since I attended a lecture given by the guys that " invented " it years ago. I still haven't seen any in action though.

Interesting. I can see it being used in a " blend " with other more traditional materials. I still haven't seen any pure graphene yet. They were talking about screens for foldable mobile phones etc. Given the vast amounts of money being invested in the development of graphene there must be something in it but they haven't got there yet as far as I can see.

Versarian is the only company in the world to have its "few-layer" graphene certified, earlier this year. They are in the middle of 5 major collaborations involving hundreds of products from aerospace to oil and including concrete, textiles and transport infrastructure. They are also in discussions with just about every state in China and have just set up a joint venture company there. There is a major electronics company in Korea working on graphene-based electronics products such as screens (believed to be Samsung but not identified officially). An Indian company is looking at car tyres with Graphene added. A well known FMCG company looking at it for packaging, it has already got approval for use in aircraft cabins where the weight savings are substantial and in the US an oil company is using it down-hole to embed sensors saving hundreds of thousands of dollars on each well. Every week seems to bring more ideas.
There have been lots of false starts because some companies have been passing off Graphite as Graphene and seeing no appreciable improvements, but the real stuff seems to have amazing properties. such as making concrete about 50% stronger and therefore much lighter and needing 50% fewer ingredients. Then there are batteries, supercapacitors, anodes, It's taken a long time to get to this point but the next 12 months could be transformational and once the ball is rolling.........

I've been working with the Graphene Institute and it is fascinating.
