Is joe Dunne the young player we got from bury about 2 months ago ?

We signed two from Bury a few months ago who both had Spanish names I think.

Probably not a mainstream opinion, but I do wish we’d put more stock in the EFL Trophy.

Let’s be honest, it’s the only national trophy we have a realistic chance of winning and, despite its yearly progression into tinpottery, it’d be nice to have a national trophy in the cabinet. It would also be major kudos for the manager who delivers it, as well as generating decent PR for the club with it being a ‘first’.

I get the argument about blooding youth and the league being more important, but, at current trajectory, what are our ultimate ambitions? I’d say we can forget about promotion for a decent while.

So, is barely surviving in League One all we’re about now? It may well be, so let’s have a go at winning something while we cling on to our League One status.

To be fair, I think we have made as much of an effort as most clubs to progress in this competition in recent years.

We won the group in 2017/18 and 2018/19, but last season and this we have been unfortunate to come up against Manchester City U21.

I also think Bolton beating them 3-1 was a bit of a freak result that left us with too much to do last night.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Hmmm. Not sure we agree on this one. It’s definitely not seen as a priority competition.

Is it for any club?

We've certainly taken it more seriously than most. The problem this season has been the size of our squad!

Other clubs may have more realistic ambitions of promotion. Other clubs have won a national trophy. Actually, the arrogance shown towards the trophy by others should be our strength.

Squad size has been done to death and I’ll not bang on about what I said pre-season now coming to fruition. It’s not something I’m pleased has happened.

It won’t ever happen, as the incentives in terms of cash for victories are clearly making a difference, but we’ve had three years of the ‘u21 teams’ version of this tournament now and it’s having a noticeable effect on how people view the competition.

It’s gradually dying in its present format. Again, only an opinion!

I agree with that, as I highlighted with my comment about a yearly progression into tinpotery. It still remains our best chance of winning a national trophy, though.

The noticeable thing is more U21 sides are qualifying for the next stage. Is that because the league sides aren't taking it as seriously or the U21 sides are taking it more seriously.

I would say that the competition is growing in strength very slowly. Crowds are slowly increasing although there are still some freakishly small ones.

What was your pre-season insight; other than the one we all had - a smaller squad might be financially inevitable after previous years' excesses (which themselves hadn't helped results) but it did leave us with little cover??

Little more than that, to be honest, with the added line that BBM felt our youth players were ready to make the step and cover the shortfall in squad depth.

Oh and the pursuit of a forward, that should have been an utmost priority, but failed.

Pyke may still be that extra goal threat - he needs to have a run of games now and STAY FIT!

Huddersfield are looking to send another forward out on loan in January.
I'm having a senior moment here and have forgotten his name but they signed him from Leyton Orient over the summer and he'd scored a fair few goals in the Conference promotion season.
