RUGBY WORLD CUP 2019 THREAD on 12:30 - Oct 13 by londonlisa2001 | I do as well. I was wondering - how did rugby become such a big thing in Japan? Anyone know? Most countries that play do so because of colonial links to countries that played rugby. But Japan seems to have just started to play? |
Jamie Joseph the coach was an ex All Black and he's raised the profile massively. "Our" Shane went over there as there's been a lot of big companies investing in the game.
RUGBY WORLD CUP 2019 THREAD on 12:37 - Oct 13 with 1263 views | monmouth | Incredible This is rugby as it should be. We should rejoice even if our own team lost to this sort of play. Anyway, what does Andy Nichol think? Jocks unlucky?

"Japan has the fourth largest population of rugby union players in the world and the sport has been played there for over a century. There are 125,000 Japanese rugby players, and 3,631 official rugby clubs"

There is also one Argy franchise the Jaguares. [Post edited 13 Oct 2019 12:45]

Sorry - when I said ‘just started to play’ I didn’t mean recently started. I meant ‘started for no usual reason’. No real links to countries that already played. They have played for a century as you point out and I wondered why. It’s obvious why Australia, NZ, Canada, Argentina, SA play. Their links to the old European countries playing. Same as cricket is big in the countries that were colonised by people playing the game. I was just interested to know if there was a reason it took off in a country that seemingly had no real links to the countries that played it.

They are letting the ball "go through the hands", it's refreshing to see a backline confident in handling skills It's like watching Clement, Titley et al at St.Helens!!

As a result of the Anglo-Japanese alliance at the start of the twentieth century according to Wiki. In the seventies they all used to be so small though !

I’ve just found an article that explains what happened. On another note - if only all rugby could go back to being played like this. It’s just wonderful to watch.
