Mawson to West Ham on 21:22 - Jun 26 by jasper_T | Every club that spends more than a year in the PL and then gets relegated faces a big deficit afterwards. That's why parachute payments were introduced. If we'd only spent a Championship budget on wages people here would have been screaming about cheapskate owners needing to spend more (hang on they do this anyway). Yes he should be sacked because the players he gave contracts to are awful, but needing to sell a few players to get the books in order is perfectly normal unless you've got a moneybags backer willing to risk horrifying debt and FFP sanctions (Newcastle signed 12 players, increased their wage bill by £40m and made a £90m loss in a year). |
I've seen nothing to indicate we need to sell any players to balance the books though ? Only a queue of players wanting to leave.

A typical wage bill in the Championship is something like £25-30m per annum and we're currently on the hook for 3x that. And most of those clubs are still making a loss. Living within our means even with the bumper first year of parachute payments requires sales to get that figure down and the starting bank balance up to cover the inevitable shortfall.
Mawson to West Ham on 10:30 - Jun 28 with 2060 views | omarjack | Deal is looking dead. Swansea are asking too much (close to 25 m) and West Ham are looking for a cheaper alternative in WBA's Craig Dawson who's likely to cost somewhere between 15-18 m or so. So..if he has no suitors he might actually stay with us at least until January.

I'm sure I read that Wolves are interested in him as well, Leicester could come in for him if they sell Maguire.

I predict it'll drag on to the last week and then we'll panic buy someone who turns out to be crap

Oh well..it's alright. David Cotterill can probably be converted into a CB. Oh and haven't you heard? Jack Rodwell is a free agent now. [Post edited 28 Jun 2018 11:27]

You say that but Huw ran the club so well, he will have ensured player contracts had relegation wage reduction clauses, so the question remains. [Post edited 28 Jun 2018 11:30]

Yeah every signing should work out perfectly. How dare we conform to the realities of the transfer market. We should be the best club in the world. Totally agree.

Resigning players who were average for us and poor elsewhere for big money is not "the reality of the transfer market". Huw couldn't see further than a certain agent's stomach and it's cost the football club dearly.

Wilfred Bony was the greatest striker in our Premier League history and the top goal scorer in the Premier League for the 12 months before his sale. Andre Ayew was top scorer with 12 goals from a wide position before his sale to West Ham. Neither were either poor or average - quite the opposite. The reality of the transfer market is that in January we were cut adrift and looked rudderless, players did not want to come here. We rolled the only dice we had and it nearly worked a miracle. Instead we end the most successful time in our history long after most thought it would.

and.... Bony had spent most of his time injured after he left and when he did play failed to reach anywhere close to his form with us, couldn't get into Stoke's team when on loan. I wasn't the only one with grave concerns when we resigned him at vast cost and high wage. Wasn't hard to predict he'd be injured most of the time for us. Ayew was a top scorer with us and couldn't do it for West Ham, when he was with us, even though he scored goals most complained about the fact that he looked out of place and disjointed the team. Two extremely bad signings that contributed to our relegation and given us a major financial headache as it looks like we'd have to continue contributing to both's wages if they left. I was responding to the post stating that they had been poor or average the last time they were with us, that’s not true. Yes form and injuries hampered them since they left but as touched upon, we were bottom of the league and rudderless. Unfortunately Championship Manager it ain’t, we cannot just click a mouse and bring a player in to rescue us of our choice, we were heavy odds on to go down. Not sure who people genuinely expected us to bring in. As stated, we had to roll the dice - this time it didn’t work, but for a while it looked like it had, and put our fate back into our own hands - which is amazing in itself. That’s football. It was bound to happen sooner or later, the fact it came after some top half finishes, a European run and a major cup run is testament to how well we did.

Which ones? The ones that worked and brought us the best players ever to play for our club and guide us to our most successful ever era? Or do you mean just the bad ones that you are concentrating on, that every single club in world football has? Take your time. (Again)

Rack up so much debt despite the sale of our most value valuable players for small fortunes over the last few seasons. Staggering incompetence but those responsible have made their personal fortunes so care little.

The sales of our players and the reinvestment of that money is the reason we stayed there so long. No use crying about it when it inevitably fails to work eventually. The fact we did what we did was remarkable.

I thought it was the management genius of Jenkins, Dim? Borrow and spend doesn't exactly equate to the invention of the wheel, as management innovations go.

You now seem to be saying it was a reflection of Jenkins' management genius that he got the club into debt to the tune of £70million. That's the trouble with your own personal style of logic; it quickly leads to nonsense, that you are then psychologically predisposed to defend at all costs with more nonsense. LOL!
