Saints Have £19.5 million Bid Accepted
Wednesday, 24th Jan 2018 13:58

According to major media sources Saints have had a big bid accepted for one of their January transfer targets.

According to many major media outlets including Sky Sports Saints have come to agreement with Monaco for the transfer of striker Guido Carrillo with the two clubs agreeing a fee of 22 million euros which equating to around £19.5 million would eclipse the club record transfer fee paid to Juventus for Mario Lemina last summer.

Carrillo who at 6ft 2 is described as a striker in the mould of Pelle, in that he is not only able to score goals but also bring others into play with deft touches and flicks and that is something that Saints have missed in the past 18 months.

That seems to be the first piece in the jigsaw puzzle with the second being a pacy attacking wide player with Quincy Promes high on Saints list.

The worrying thing though is Saints are not being linked with many central defenders at present and in my opinion this is as much a problem area as our lack of goals.

Saints seem readly and willing to spend a fair chunk of the incoming cash from Virgil Van Dijk although if they bring in two or three in the next week it will leave us with a big squad and one that would need to be trimmed in the summer, if only to provide not only places in the squad but money for those transfers.

"Carrillo who at 6ft 2 is described as a striker in the mould of Pelle, in that he is not only able to score goals but also bring others into play with deft touches and flicks"

You are joking, Nick, unless you remove the word 'only' from that sentence. . He has an abysmal scoring rate even in the French league and is generally considered to be a clumsy player who doesn't have deft touches. About the only thing you got right is his height.

You've got me worried now, dirk doone. We need to get some pace into that team as a priority and you've just made him sound like a bit of a carthorse! More defenders we don't need.

Maybe not 'more' defenders Lord Lucan but certainly better ones. I hope Dirk is being a pessimist because 19.5m is a lot for a carthorse.

This is good news. We have a target man. Things are happening.

While his stats are underwhelming, the truth is that our current focus is on staying up. To do that we only need a striker able to play in our system and score a goal every other game to ensure safety. Seven goals in 3 starts and 14 substitute appearances is better than any of our fit strikers and shows that he can do that. It would be great to get a player with a better goal scoring record, but they’re difficult to find and expensive. I still hope we get Quincy Promes in.

It’s also important to keep in mind that this must be a Pellegrino signing rather than a Southampton signing. If he flops, then I think we’ll see the manager gone before the end of the season.

Dirk doone:

In the 15 league games he has played this season, he has only started two. In Monaco's 3-2 win over Troyes he came off the bench and scored 2 goals to secure victory. In the the recent coupe de France game he played 90 minutes in (admittedly against lower league oppo) he scored a hattrick.

Overall 8 goals in 24 appearances this season. 0.33 Goals per game. 552 minutes in total makes it a goal every 69 minutes playing time. There are worse players out there. Anything more prolific and you're looking at a £50-70 million rated player who will not be joining Saints.

And i'm not sure where you see that he's a clumsy player. This was written about him in 2015 (source: O-post.com):

"Without wanting to wheel out the old cliché ‘he has good feet for a big man’ – Guido Carrillo does in fact have an underrated technical ability to go with his obvious physical advantages as a centre-forward.

At 6 foot 3 inches (1.91 metres) Carrillo is a powerful number nine, capable of playing with his back to goal and bringing others into play but posing a real threat in the penalty area from crosses and set-pieces.

His presence in the attack makes him ideal to play as a lone striker, as has often been the case for Estudiantes in the past year, but he could just as easily play in a 4-4-2 alongside another striker with wingers providing width and delivering crosses into the box.

In the past two weeks, Carrillo has given perfect examples of what he does best with two late headed goals to give Estudiantes a Copa Argentina victory over Santamarina and another towering header to pick up three points against Defensa y Justicia this week. However, to label him simply as a lumbering target man would be to do him a disservice.

His build-up play is good and his movement and positional sense around the penalty area is excellent. Smart runs and being alert around the six-yard box have made Carrillo equally dangerous with the ball into his feet in the penalty box.

Additionally, Carrillo has emerged as a real leader on the pitch for Estudiantes and has captained the side on a number of occasions. He has thrived under the responsibility but importantly for perspective clubs he has shown a mental fortitude that will stand him in good stead for a potentially testing move to Europe.

Although I can pick the important bits out:

Style of play
A centre-forward by trade, Carrillo is a tall and imposing figure standing at over 6ft 2in tall and is known for his aerial abilities. The 26-year old poses a significant threat in set-piece situations owing to his strong heading prowess and the physicality aspect of his game.

He is also known to be a lethal finisher and has, on occasions, been compared to Frech legend David Trezeguet. A goal poacher by nature, the Argentine can lead the line by himself but relishes and excels when playing in a system with two strikers.

What Does the Future Hold?
Southampton desperately need a striker, given the dry spells that the likes of Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long are going through. With the threat of relegation looming large, new firepower at the top is something that they need urgently.

While Carrillo hasn’t been a prolific goalscorer in recent years, which is mostly due to the limited amount of playing time he has been getting at Monaco, he is someone the Southampton manager knows well from their days together at Estudiantes. The 26-year old has shown glimpses of what he can do if given a regular run in the side and could turn things around for the Saints if signed.

20 goals in 50 appearances for Monaco reported by Sky. Most of those games he came on as a sub. If he's 6'2" and can mix it up with the opposition defenders then Gabbiadini hopefully will get the opportunity to score a few.

Patience is a virtue...and so who's the next one, Les?

Dirk you need to dig a little deeper into his scoring stats.
This season he's scored a goal every 99 minutes. That's a rate only bettered by Kane and Aguero in this country.
He's a target man, that's what we need. Fingers crossed the black box has worked for us and he hits the ground running. We can't afford for him to take 3 months to adjust.

What excites me most about this is the fact Carillio can play as a lone target man or in a 4-4-2 . That gives us more variation in tactics and will keep oppositions guessing.

Get him up front with Gabbi in a 4-4-2 and we could really see something special forming. Likewise, see him play as a target man/pelle hold up man in a 4-2-3-1 and Gabbi and others will be in dreamland.

Have Promes on the left wing as well and i wouldn't rule out Europa league spot come May (that last bit was a joke BTW...)

OK, I'm going to get swept along by the general mood of optimism here. He is a good header of the ball and new strikers usually do score a couple of goals when they first play in this country, which might just get us the points we need to stay up. Good luck to him!

ALL of the AS Monaco supporters websites are saying the club should bite out hand off for that money, and he is not a top level player!! Hope to be wrong but looks like another low output foreigner which is exactly what we don't need!

dirk_doone added 15:53 - Jan 24
law101. We all know he's not VERY good and that Monaco are keen to get rid of him but we're just hoping he might be good enough to help keep us up. The one thing he can do is head the ball and while Austin is injured we have nobody else who can do that. It's obvious the club is not prepared to pay the money it takes to buy a top striker and that the main objective in this transfer window, as in previous ones, will be to make a profit so under the circumstances we couldn't really expect much better than Carrillo.

Well done Les! I can't wait for Prowsey to unerringly place ball after ball on his head, for him to score loads of goals. What we don't need is anybody new coming in good enough to give him some service , as we have the best suppliers from midfield in the Galaxy.

He'll be a useful addition when defending set pieces. Now if Saints could aslo just try leaving a player upfield when defending corners I'll be happier.

As it happens our chances created are the highest outside the top six suggesting scoring is the problem not creating
As for our recruitment policy everybody outside the Southampton whinging society knows it stands up to scrutiny

dirk done, with your inane comments are you sure you are a Saints supporter? I would like to know where you get this information that he is not very good and Monaco wanted to get rid of him ?

legod7, ignore me and read all the Monaco fans messageboards. They are overjoyed to see the back of a player they think has no skill and whom thought they'd be lucky to even get 5 million euros for. They think its incroyable!

If you can't read French, I'll translate a comment which sums up the hundreds of others they've posted. Every single Monaco fan is happy to see the back of him:

"I do not believe it but we would be the crooks of the centuries if we could flog Carrillo for 20M euros."
