Clyne Set To Join Liverpool Today But Palace Have Sell On Clause Monday, 29th Jun 2015 08:13 Nathaniel Clyne will end his three year stay at St Mary's today according to most of the national media.
Nathaniel Clyne is supposedly up on Merseyside today and will be having a medical, assuming that he passes then it is likely that he will be announced as the fourth Saints player to join Liverpool in a year and he will hope that he has a bit more success at Anfield than the other three.
The fee being quoted is £12.5 million which is less than the £15 million that Saints were supposedly holding out for a few weeks ago. That will disappoint some Saints supporters but the reality is there is always some haggling in transfers and with Clyne having only a year left on his contract and with no real other clubs of any stature interested, Saints were caught in a dilemma, either risk seeing him see out the final year of his contract and walk away for nothing next summer or take a decent offer now.
Saints chose the latter and they were probably influenced by the fact that in Cedric Soares they think that having already signed Clyne's replacement all things being equal this was as good a deal as we would get.
There are some queries about the fee itself though, firstly in some quarters it is being reported as £10.5 million pounds down and a further £2 million in add ons which would be a little disappointing, but there is also the little matter that his previous club Crystal Palace appear to have a sell on clause of reportedly 20 %. This would mean that they would be due something between £2- £3 million depending on the transfer fee, assuming that the 20% is on the profit between Saints fee back in 2012 and the actual amount raked in now.
This mean that Saints are likely to only net around £7 -9. Million in actual cash now. But that is still a good return on a player from whom the club have had three good years of service, as i have often said this is the way the club has to go to continue to build and all that ever matters is what the club do next and hopefully in the capture of Cedric Soares they have a player more than capable of stepping into Clyne's boots.

Where did u get this £15M fee from in the first place that was banded around? It seems to have been a number made up by the media...

If you read the article you will see I said "The fee being quoted is £12.5 million which is less than the £15 million that Saints were supposedly holding out for a few weeks ago." Your right its a figure driven by the media

Interesting that none of the big clubs were in for him. He is the best English right-back in the PL and only a second rank club make a bid. That lack of competition would seem to be the main factor in what will be a very disappointing price. I accept the 'last year on the contract' argument but by that logic the price could be a lot less and still more than next year's zero. Why not just 4 million for instance? The brutal and essential truth in all this is that once the player made it clear he wanted to leave we were done for...

I guess the top clubs don't see Clyne as a world class option for them, he might be the best English option but judging by the state of the English team at the moment doesn't say much. Added to the fact that the Saints players leaving last season have hardly stood out, maybe the Saints whole is greater than the sum of its parts? Still if he can double his salary at a club Saints are supposedly in competition with then good luck to him. Seems a decent price if he could possibly go for nothing next season.

In the not so distant future we will be attracting players that are better than those at Liverpool spurs ,we are still improving . He has is going for the money I'm sure plus Liverpool's agent Roy dropped him from the national team putting the seed of doubt in his mind that saints players are only worthy when all else fails . Liverpool players and other so called top teams obviously get first choice in his mind. so Nathaniel was tapped up once his involvement in England was assured ,as last season with them other plebs . I hope he does well for England but fux it up for the scousers with but I don't want Brenda to lose his job because you know who they will come after next ... In Ron we trust

A 400% mark up on our investment (excluding wages of course) and a significant contribution from Clyne to get us from Premier League newbies to the 7th best is my assessment of the deal. Thank you Clyne for your service. I wish you well (although I hope Liverpool struggle) and as Saints fans we move on to the next adventure.

Still some head scratching over this (yeah, I know, maybe it's just dandruff) Why would he move sideways on the table and not up? Why did none of the Big & Rich 4 come after him? They need English players and he's one of the few with talent that's not on the women's team. No worries! Brenda can still make a sow's ear out of a silk purse! Today's drinking game: At Clyne's press conference, you have to do a shot every time Brenda uses the phrase "he's a great technician".

We should have kept him for the last season. If the profit is £7m then that would be a steal for us to sign a player of his class for £7m. Assuming he leeft on a free at the end of the season. Who knows what the furture brings? If we were to imporve on last season, have a decent European campaign and domestic cup run. Would he then be tempted to saty for a further 3 seasons? But as you say Nick, it's all down to soccernomics.

I am not sure how we get to around 7-9m in profit? 10.5 - 20% (2.1m) = 8.4m Then we take what we paid for him off (2.5m according to the Independent at the time) = 5.9 Then we take the cost of his replacement (Soares @ 3.6m according to the guardian) That make as net profit of 2.3m Of course we will get 80% of the 2.5m "add-ons" as well. Which are likely to vary in probability, ranging from international apps to a Liverpool CL Victory.

If the add-ons are linked to Liverpool winning anything then we may have a long wait...

I'm sorry to see Clyne go, and sorrier to see him go to Liverpool. He was fairly anonymous towards the end of the season, though, so definitely not a disaster to sell. To be fair his form might have dipped because he played pretty much every game. We need to buy another RB - can't expect Soares to play every game next season, or even expect him to hit the ground running

Good luck to him. At least he hasn't thrown his toys out of the pram unlike some of his new of his new colleagues, when it comes to trying to secure a move. He doesn't have the competition in Liverpool's squad, so will have a starting place secured. He'll get a hefty pay rise, which, will go some way to compensate him for having to endure the inane ramblings of Brendan. Also, who's to say that our Soares won't make us forget?....Maybe Liverpool will make a bid soon enough, as they've not been the same since their Suarez went to a big club.
