Go Fourth And Multiply
Tuesday, 8th Oct 2013 08:10

With the International's meaning there is a fortnight between games, it leaves Saints supporters with an extended period to bask in the heady heights of fourth.

Most Saints supporters will have a view on the games this season and like most football supporters their opinion's will differ greatly, even after Sunday's games there were vast contrasting views on how well one player or another performed.

But with the International break meaning that there will be two weeks with little real football news from St Mary's the time is here to just sit back and enjoy being not only 4th in the Premier League but sitting in the Champions League places.

Of course its early days yet and there are many who would say a league table truly doesn't start to take shape till after ten games, but when we look at were we were after 7 games last year and where we are now then there is something to feel happy about, yes Saints have got lucky in a couple of games, but they have been evened out by other performances.

So although it would be foolish to start bragging about our position or indeed to assume we will still be there come May when it really counts, we can have that smug glow of satisfaction of a job that has so far been well done.

So lets enjoy for a wek or so before we get back to reality.

To consolidate their fourth position Saints have two weeks to work out how to, not only beat top sides like Liverpool, but to be able to beat also-ran, mid-table teams. I believe they face one next?

Interesting fixtures calculator this season. Last year we'd already played most of the top sides. This year we've still have got to play the top 11 bar Liverpool (and ourselves). I'm not sure that we'll be able to go at 2 points a game through the next period of fixtures, but can't wait to see how to perform against the better sides. One thing that should be guaranteed is the games will be a lot more open than they were against the likes of Norwich, Sunderland and West Ham.

Anyone worried about Saint's lack of finishing from open play may find the answer lies here....

Not just 4th but the 2nd best defence in Europe, now that's pretty good going, not many seasons we've been able to say that.

It evens out: we should've beaten West Ham, we didn't deserve to beat Swansea.

Is it not slightly insulting that Man U are 1/2 against us and yet we're 6/1? I can't wait for the international break to be over so we can get at them.

If at the beginning of the season we had been told we would be fourth after seven games, we all would have taken it. So far, we have exceeded most of our, and all pundits', expectations but it would of course be a fairer judgement to wait until we have played more sides in the top half to give us a bigger picture. Although we are fourth and confident of competing, we will go up to Old Trafford with a feeling that we have nothing to lose. It is a game we should certainly enjoy and try to win. The comparisons to this time last season are huge, and the international break has come at a good time: it is not just about having an extended period of time to enjoy our league position, but it is also a psychological positive on other teams (who have not had such a good run of results and are itching to put thing right but have to wait two weeks).
We won't play out of our skin every week, but no team does. Like previous posters say here, things even themselves out and what goes around, comes around.
Saints are moving with the times and onto bigger and better things.

Despite being a geordie saint I live and work in Manchester. I have greatly enjoyed explaining to any Man U fan who will listen that even if they beat us in the next game we will still be above them.

Whenever people ask me why I support saints I always say "for the glory". That is looking a lot more realistic at the moment.

Even if we lose to Manure, we will still be above them in the league that weekend. Happy days.
