Painful. This 4-2-3-1 formation doesn't work where the 3 all want to be number 10s and none of them do the basics. They don't win battles, don't create, score Nor defend when needed. We are carrying 3.
I would go back to old fashioned 4-4-2 and get everyone to compete and get some more ball in the box. We have a shocking lack of delivery too - jwp must play for me .
Must also have a word with Cedric - stupid over confidence at the back cost us at the end.
For the record - i don't think the manager is up to it. He bored la Liga to death with Alaves, with the most negative displays in years. We shouldn't be surprised. |

Without lemina we'd have been out of it at Huddersfield - how pelligrino can think Romeu can carry a midfield on his own is beyond me. We are carrying the fancy Dans of tadic, Boufal, Redmond and Davis every week - and they aren't even that fancy. Compare any of them to the watford left winger.
You have to complete and win your battles in this league and we don't seem to have the personnel to do so Nor the manager who understands the game. 6 pointer on sat and palace are better than we are by the weekend's performance. I'd bring Yoshida back too - not that I think he is great, but he seems committed and he wants to win.
Oh and the club posting video of us shooting from 25 yards without being closed down is ironic...

Extremely frustrating as we were so much better than them. Agree with many of the comments here but the main for me is we are too tippy Tappy and don't put enough quality ball in the box, we overplay as standard and need to work on earlier and better balls into the danger zone.
Stupid goals conceded too, both goals were from stupid push in the back fouls from Long balls hoofed forward. Fonte and Bertrand at fault - we need to stop poor goals which have crept in recently.
Mom for us for me was Yoshida and I don't say that too often - did nothing wrong and won our pen from a forceful run into the box, a few of our other players should take note.. |

Agreed with much of above. Some excellent pass and move Football in the last 50 mins with the full backs giving great width.
A sloppy start though and a different ref could easily have given them a pen and Romeu was also in danger of a second yellow. Once we got ahead though we looked excellent.
Am also pleased that Bournemouth turned over Everton and showed Koeman isn't that great.
Van Dyke MOM for me - there isnt a better centre half in this league. Bring on Leicester. |

Absolutely fantastic performance. Midfield and Defence were outstanding and we quite literally didn't give their forwards a kick. Great to see us go and dominate the game at old Trafford - they were poor but we made them look poor... Loved it. Fans were great too by the sound on the global feed.
Growing up in qpr supporting west london I never thought Charlie Austin was anything other than a great signing! Je Suis Charlie. |

Bad result and again not clinical enough in the final third.
What worries me most is what has been alluded to above re the shooting practice and lack of half time Organization for the subs. I fear we are not being well coached. I find some of the match day selections very odd, Yoshida at RB etc. I find some of the subs even more odd - Long scores last week and does ok and this week we drop him and we put Juanmi on first - do we expect him to deliver more than Long? Mane frustrates me but he's our best offensive player - why take him off??
Some comments above on Guzan - we have JWP on the pitch so why not have him on every corner. Tadic's floated corners were a total waste and just gave him confidence. Just pick our best team and do the basics right and we'd have a better chance.
Looking at recent results of the u21s and u18s - there are clearly issues across the entire potential squad. The manager needs to put this right and get our Southampton spirit back. |

It is easy to write comments to criticise and sometimes harder to praise - but we were fantastic and should have been more... Great at the back and what a difference Bertrand makes, we were also dynamic going forward with Mane and Pelle looking like world beaters... Loved it - let's hope we really kick on now. |

Nothing against Targett who is a Southampton kid and doing his best until Bertrand returns.
That for me was a clear pen though and am surprised with Pulis - targett lunged in across mcmanaman's path and didn't get the ball. Mcmanaman 'dived' over him - if he didn't he would have been taken out. He clearly 'impeded' the player. We got very lucky indeed.... |

Agree with most comments here. For me this was 2 points given up against a far inferior side. We need to show more desire and intent to win. We missed Romeu's passing and JWP was not the player last week as was too far forward again.
Why J Rod on the left and Tadic on the right? Surely you switch them round. Not sure why we take Juanmi and Long every week to warm the bench. If we need a goal then put them on. Long at his old club was a logical selection.
Just like watford - we went for a 0 0 and got one. I think we need to aim to beat bottom 5 sides. Are we being limited by our manager's ambition?
Van diyk looked good though and yes was better than last season... |

Superb win. Wanyama is particular was the star as he dominated arsenal and showed exactly what a midfield player is about.
Bertrand was great too as was alderweireld and a great save from Forster. The negative is a don't want to see a super deluxe finish like that from pelle again when he could have walked it in - that is not the southampton way (brilliant documentary btw)
Credit to Koeman too for taking the heat out of the gardos situation and bringing on yoshida.
When we have clyne, schneiderlin, cork and j Rod we may be dangerous! Bring on United. |

Christmas is back on!
We won in both boxes yest and that wins you games. Main difference going forward was the willingness to put in early good quality crosses - this has been lacking due to tadic's overelaboration and mane's lack of ability recently. We also saw more of clyne and Bertrand as attacking forces which was good to see.
Really good win and great spirit all round. Christmas got a whole lot merrier... |

In truth it wasn't that different to other away league performances - generally in control and not much adventure in the final third.
Hesketh was good (awful foul on him btw), wanyama and bertrand again excellent.
Tadic and Mane extremely poor however, I don't understand why Mane was selected over Long for any reason you can name - grit, wintery conditions, form, pace, goal threat... I thought Mane was more likely to get sent off than make any contribution and for me was akin to playing with 10 men - to wait over 75 mins to make that change was ridiculous. I truly hope our coaches are working with him as everything needs work, starting with basic control. Tadic talks of playing with his head up but he obviously doesn't when taking pens... Jwp or pelle surely on them.
Another bad goal and that must stop - wasn't a good day for clyne... We also need to get Forster moving his feet - quicker feet and he saves the last 3 goals which all went between his.
3 points wasted against realistically the worst side in the league and we can't afford these if we want to keep schneiderlin and wanyama and sign bertrand and Alderweireld. Must retain these players! I really hope we start to pick the right formations again and show more ability in attack in the upcoming games. |

Sickening defeat and agree with Jez on the substitution in timing. I also don't ubderstand taking off Long for Mayuka. Long was still full of running and although he missed chances he was at least on the end of things. I can't imagine Mayuka getting close, we basically dominated a game, gave goals away and made strange subs which prevented us getting back into it. Koeman has had a very bad 4 games for me.
Another little moan - our corners are terrible. Do we not practice or are we just reliant on JWP?
The popular press who don't watch us every week will say 'I told you so' and it is really sad because I think with some sensible mgt we wouldn't have lost any of these games. Back to sensible selections and game plans and we will get back to winning.
