So a report he was involved in was one of the pieces used by the Sentencing Council in their review.

It says “sentencing decisions needed bigger scrutiny and judges must be afforded more information about the offender’s background. ”

There’s nothing that I can see about him suggesting shorter sentences for ethnic minorities it there seems to be an imbalance in the data. Looks like the Sentencing Council have made a very clumsy attempt to remedy this.

Of course that doesn’t come across in the article because it’s the Mail.

FWIW I think Lammy is an awful politician and only a slightly better human being but I don’t think this one can be blamed on him.

Interestingly Robert Jennrick said that when it can before the Tories when they were in power they also thought it was ridiculous and would have pushed it back (as Labour have done).

He didn’t pin it in Lammy though which speaks volumes.

"Of course that doesn’t come across in the article because it’s the Mail"
Usual response, but It's also in the Times and many other newspapers and media outlets.

The Lammy Review, chaired by David Lammy MP, is an independent review of the treatment of, and outcomes for, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals in the Criminal Justice System (CJS).

How much influence did it have on the Sentencing Council outcomes? A bit? Lots? More or less than all the others?

I don't know, I wasn't there, but he was chairman of the quango that made the recomendation, so no doubt Lammy the racist had quite and influence on their decision.

I’m no fan of Lammy, but pinning this on him is click bait nonsense.

Lammy researched and published a report 8 years ago while in opposition. According to The Times, Lammy’s document and others including the Equal Treatment Bench Book and a HM Inspectorate of Probation report from 2021 were considered when preparing the new guidelines, however there’s no direct naming of sources to provenance the claims.

It also appears that the previous government were consulted on the new proposed guidance between November 2023 and February 202. This begs the question what did the then Justice Secretary have to say in response to or not say in response to the consultation? I’d have thought the responses of the then government would have been factored in to the new guidance because if the government isn’t happy they can legislate against the changes, maybe Jenrick hasn’t come out all guns blazing because one of his predecessors may have indicated they were happy with the guidance.

Previously, the overwhelming majority of offenders were subject to probation reports, but I believe that all changed when Grayling made a huge number of disastrous changes to the criminal justice system in 2014 including the Probation Service. We’re still paying the price for them now.

Presumably as I think about it this may be an attempt to alter the statistics and " level out" racial traits or racial biasses in jailing people. I have not researched the statistics.

For example people of African heritage may have a much higher rates of being jailed per 100,000 than white people. This may be perceived, all things being equal, discriminatory if you assume all cultures have the same mentality and behaviour patterns.

Activists usually present arguments that BAME populations are treated more severely than whites people doing the same crimes.

Such advice may be seen as a dampening effect and will make
the figures look better.

In an ideal world BAME and white people would commit terrible crimes at the same proportion per 100,000 of the population.

This is not how I think but we live in a world of public bodies pouring over statistics to prove success of certain policies of integration.

I wasn't pinning it on Lammy, I just said his finger prints were all over this, and they were.

The guy is a bloody racist.

I’m not saying you were pinning it on him, I was referring to the press and DM and I wasn't clear enough, apologies.

Lammy’s work may have been a factor, but so were other more weighty documents like the HM Inspectorate report. I suspect the Ministry of Justice dropped the ball in 2023/24.

Surprise, surprise - Not!!!

The finger was pointed at the current government, but it’s clear now from the letter that the previous government received the report, had the opportunity to comment on it and then went on to accept the recommendations lock stock and barrel. Gareth Bacon MP who signed the letter off was the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Ministry of Justice.

After their headline and editorial piece lambasting of Keir Starmer for 2 tiers of justice, you’d think the DM would welcome the opportunity to make good their error and apologise - no chance there’s nowt in the paper highlighting the fact the Conservatives signed this off.

Honest Bob Jenrick is a joke. It would be nice if politicians who made a mistake put their hands up and apologised instead of lying and being deceitful, maybe we’d trust them more if they were honest.
