Strong rumour today seems to be that Saint Rishi will today extend the furlough scheme from the end of June to September.
But with the percentage of pay funded dropping from 80% to 60%.

I think the reality is that it is going to take a lot of employers quite a bit of time to make workplaces social distancing compliant.
And even when they are, I find it difficult to see how they will be able to accommodate the same number of people. | |

Where possible employers could start a pattern of 3 shifts a day to minimise contact, not ideal but at least that would allow at least 66% of the normal workforce to maintain their income.

I haven't read the detail yet but on the face of it, it's quite worrying we're offering a furlough through to October as it suggests that no significant changes to our lives until at least that date.
It's a good thing that part-time work is allowed. I could do with a couple of our team being in 1-2 days a week but the current scheme which is 'all or nothing' isn't helpful at all and means me and the Mrs end up having to do the work that we can't ask our furloughed staff to do, on top of everything else.
It would also save the government money so doesn't really make sense why they haven't done part-time furloughing so far.
The tourism industry unfortunately is f*cked. Furlough ending in October just as all of the industries reliant on tourism go out of season... how are they going to pay their staff from October until the start of the new season in Spring 2021? |  |

I can't say I'm sad that there will be far fewer flights - it's so harmful for the climate and the sky has been so much more clear recently.
All these people flying round the world for meetings is utterly pointless and the last 2 months has shown many that it's a waste of time. When I used to do it, generally the reason was tenuous and you'd end up on the p*ss for a week.
Flying around the world should be a real luxury and not something cheap and polluting. |  |

Indeed. I have my stag do booked for next month. RyanAir have cancelled the flight so much that you can't book on to it, but of course are refusing to even discuss a refund and their 'Contact Us' page is well hidden. | |

On the plus side; I think many more people will holiday in the UK - at least for the next few years. There's also no reason why you can't take your car or a motorhome through the Channel Tunnel or across by ferry to France and drive down through to the South or even Spain, etc.

Annoyingly though, we holiday in the UK a couple of times a year - costs for that will now go through the roof - a £1500 cottage I would have booked, for a week is already looking like £2500 for the same period in August, I was having a look last week out of curiosity. | |

It's absolutely not a good idea mush. In normal circumstances if you were propping up staff wages with loans then you'd almost certainly be trading whilst insolvent which is illegal if it's over a period of time and there's no obvious route out.
Wouldn't be the best BUSINESS move when the government are offering to pay your payroll either. P*ssing money away. [Post edited 12 May 2020 16:49]
