I've been to Malta a dozen times over the last 25 years, mainly on Scuba based holidays. I don't dive any more but still swim and snorkel, and Malta is absolutely superb for all of these activities due to the clear, blue, warm water. Even at the end of winter the sea temperature only drops to a low of 15/16 degrees.
There aren't that many sandy beaches but there are lots of places to sunbathe or swim off the rocky shore. The long walking path between Sliema and St Julians' is particularly good for this and you will see people going into the sea here even in November if the sun is out. Lots of bars and restaurants along the promenade too and if you want a more lively scene (I'm way too old for it) try Paceville in St Julians. There's a good cinema there too - I memorably watched the Baz Luhrmann's 'Elvis' film there in 2022. Is quite old fashioned, in tone, they even have an interval!
Valletta is world class city - full of incredible architecture, old churches/Cathedrals and you can see two Caravaggio paintings in St John's Co - Cathedral - he completed them when he was living in Malta in the early 1600s whilst on the run from a murder charge in Rome.
It's a very Mediterranean/European feeling city, with excellent bars, cafes and restaurants everywhere. Republic Street is the main boulevard, with everything else radiating off from it - including a walk out to the Upper Barrakka Gardens where there are wonderful views of Grand Harbour.
Valletta is a bit hilly so remember to bring your walking legs. (Lord Byron, who had a club foot departed the city in 1811 declaring, 'Adieu, ye cursed streets of stairs'). A great place to contemplate Byron's time in Malta and that of Samuel Taylor Coleridge who was also there working for the British Government a few years earlier, is '67 Kapitali', a brilliant craft ale bar which serves food too. I often like to wander around a little half cut, imagining I'm off to meet the great poets after a few sherbets in there! The baroque architecture, oriel windows, beautiful meandering streets which offer a glimpse of the Mediterranean Sea at their far ends is stunning. it's definitely a City I could live in.
There are a number of museums - particularly dealing with the Ottoman siege of Malta in 1565 and the role played by the Knights of St John, but my favourite is the Lascaris War Rooms where the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943 was planned, also the scene of the famous Pedestal Convoy in 1942 which more or less saved Malta from Axis take-over.
Take the incredibly futuristic lift from Upper Barrakka Gardens down to the ferries and take the fast catamaran service to Gozo - you will need at least a day for this. it's only 45 minutes on the fast ferry but there is so much to see and do there. Gozo also has excellent resorts and swimming spots - try Xlendi or Marsalforn Bay, and fabulous little towns with beautiful churches and town squares. Rabat, the capital of Gozo, has a citadel (in which the whole population once used to hide from the Ottoman raiders) and views around the whole island. you can get around Gozo easily by bus, Uber or taxi. Then, fast cat back to Valletta.
There's so much more too but Valletta is always my starting and end point.
The locals are friendly although can be reserved and socially conservative (especially the older generation). They love British (and Italian) football and my QPR top always gets noticed and commented on, although a lot of Maltese follow Liverpool, ManU and a throw back to the 70s - Leeds.
Being an ex British colony and wartime ally it feels very much at home being there - they drive on the left and almost everyone speaks fluent English.

Cracking result! It's the hope that kills you. In some ways a 5-0 defeat would have been easier to accept and process. I've just bought my ticket for the Sunderland game. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves against the Mackems. What's not to like there? |

Real shame that Frey is injured. With both him and Lloyd available I would have gone for one of them up top, alternating them with a half each. They can both defend from the front, charging down the opposition defences to squeeze them and force quick balls/mistakes which our crafty little midfield army of Number 10s could take advantage of. In the absence of Frey, I would still try this
with Lloyd at least. Playing Celar, you might as well play with 10 men. Maybe start with Lloyd and then when he's knackered, switch to the 4-3-3? |

I hope I'm wrong and he goes on to smash in 100 goals in a stellar career for us a la Lineker. I dont know much about tactics, how to coach strikers, running in behind the central defenders etc, but in 45 years of going to Rangers I really cannot recall a worst striker and if there was he certainly wasn't given as many games as Celar has to prove himself. I think even Steve Slade and Brett Angell looked more effective. [Post edited 23 Oct 20:00]

Agree, Dykes was a million times better than Celar or Washington/Bonne.
Lloyd imposed his pace and physicality on the Cov defence immediately and forced them in to having to clear their lines more quickly, which then lead to us getting more of a foothold in the game. I thought the positive introduction of him and Morgan last night was a real morale boost at least and gives us a sliver of hope for the future. Walking out the ground I was happier than my Cov supporting mate so that cheered me up even more! Maybe we're not as bad as we think, or possibly just a bit more realistic in terms of expectations? I'm bringing a Coventry supporting mate from work. Seemed a great idea when we planned it a few weeks ago. Absolutely dreading it. The only good thing is I have zero expectations. You never know, we might just get very lucky in this game, but I just can't see this team being good enough to build and sustain any kind of lead and then be strong enough to defend it. Any side in this division quickly understands that they can slice through our midfield like butter.
Anytime we do go a goal up we then seem to immediately crumble.

I admire your faith mate and even up until today I thought there might be a team in there somewhere, but today's lot were a ghost of the side that lost at home to Hull. There was a bit of fight in that game, this lot were soulless.
I've been following Rangers for 45 years and seen some crap sides but today's lot made the 2001 boys look like Brazil! Marti saved us last year but on this showing he is taking us down next year. We need some steel in midfield and quick.
Marti's made some extremely bad signings. Celar is terrible and Madsen displays the body language of a wallflower at a disco. Roll your sleeves up ffs and get stuck in you big long streak of piss!
Dembele is a gem. What a goal and Michi Frey worked his socks off. Jimmy and Cook huffed and puffed and Nardi kept the score down. The rest were an embarrassment. Even Chair, although I'll give old skullcrusher the benefit of the doubt because he's been out for a while and maybe still a bit rusty. Great result for Chesham Terry. Hope you get a decent First Round draw. I love your ground too, went there a few years ago - proper terraces, countryside views and a brilliant bar I seem to remember. My local team, Slough Town, went out 2-1 in a tight game away at Woking. Which means all my FA Cup hopes and dreams, for this season at least, now reside with QPR 😀! I know they won't let me down...

Yes, I noticed this as well. Lot of fans round me in the SAR voicing frustrations particularly after first goal went in. You can't blame them - no win at home yet and was a miserable, wet, evening to come and watch a football match. Not seen the attendance figure but it looked like 11-12000 max to me. Lots of empty seats everywhere.
I'm not very savvy regarding formations and tactics etc -many people on this site are excellent at spotting things I would never notice, but I actually really enjoyed a great deal of the football we played last night. It was so much better than the Millwall game. We played with more purpose and energy and players were much more prepared to fight to win the ball back in the opposition half and were fighting for each other as well. Some of our passing and movement was superb and I really enjoyed watching Saito in particular. I came away thinking the score didn't really reflect the balance of play and on a different night we could have been 2-0 up after 15 minutes the way we came out the traps. I still think there's a very good team in there somewhere, we just need to be patient. To me, last night, strangely enough, felt like progress in the right direction. |

Agree - the build up was so slow, even towards the end when we should have been going full pelt for a winner. There's a good team in there somewhere though. We need Colback in there to put his foot on the ball and the attacking midfielders need to be stronger in
the tackle and more prepared /committed to winning the
ball/winning it back in the final 3rd. Frey did this (and I thought he was superb today). In the end I thought we
were pretty lucky to
come away with a point against a physically stronger and
mentally more determined Millwall. Thank God we've got some proper Autumnal 3 o clock kick offs to look forward to. Atmosphere and energy seemed too lethargic today. [Post edited 22 Sep 7:56]

Was a great day - stayed for a couple of beers afterwards in Blue and White club, then whilst walking back to White City Tube, few people coming other way said it was shut, so we turned around and bumped straight into Stevie Palmer who offered us a lift in his car! Top Chap.

I went to see Dortmund play Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga back in April 2016 & there were plenty of English & Scottish fans there. They have a big international following. Fantastic experience & I'd like to go back again. Last time was for a Cup game against Union Berlin where the away support numbered over 12,000. Match day lasts all day and involves copious amounts of beer being sunk which certainly contributes to a raucous atmosphere. Everyone is extremely well behaved and friendly. |
