For Puel's first game he did ok. His first mistake was that he set up the 2 box to box midfielders to be Prowsey and Davis. Neither of them are that great defensively so that made created issues for Romeu. Notice that once Hojbjerg came on the midfield was way more comfortable. JWP and Davis can't play at the same time. Claise and Hojbjerg can't play at the same time in the box to box role. Next, Cedric should not have started. He missed so many passes and crosses. Puel probably thought he was fit based on his sheer pace but it is obvious he isn't Mentally ready. I thought Pied was the better player that game. Moving on, I think our defense will get better as Jose and Bertrand come back. Jose will settle us down and Bertrand will add the last piece of the puzzle which is pace on the left wing. Targett obviously doesn't have pace but he is a smart player who has a great cross so he will do just fine for now. Also, Watford's formation made it difficult for us to break them down. They play 3-5-2 so the midfield is packed. Since we like to dominate the ball now, the oppositions wingbacks become fullbacks so they were really playing 5-3-2. Since we play a mainly central formation, due to the amount of CMs we have, breaking down oppositions with 6 central players (3 center backs and 3 center midfielders) is difficult. We should have solved this problem with our outside backs, Targett and Cedric but neither were up to par and when they got the ball they countered back fast. The midfield, lacking defensive attributes, was vulnerable and that's how they scored. Unfortunately, I think we have finished our business in the transfer window even though we do need more players. We need a backup CB...Yoshida scares me sometimes although he is good. I don't think we need a Striker per say. I think we need a technically gifted #10 who can also play striker (like Mane?). If Tadic got injured, who would step up properly? Davis is the obvious candidate but I think Davis is the best box to box midfielder we have. He loves creating something from deep. Sorry for the long post but I had a lot say. |

This game was a tactical blunder....there were a couple of things we should notice. Notice how this is the second time that we have been caught on the counter right after a corner....Notice how the most of the goals were given up in the middle. First of all we're missing the engine to our team. I don't think that Wanyama can play with Davis in the midfield because Davis isn't that great at tracking back. We need an engine in the midfield. Box to box. Hopefully Romeu and Clasie will be the engine to our team since Schneiderlin is gone. Also from the counter on the corners. We need to be more aware of those situations. We need at least 1 defensive mid at the top of the box but you have Wanyama in the box and Davis taking corners. And the front four want to score....our 2 smallest players are the only ones back. It's wrong. Finally, about Maya. I don't think Yoshida is bad but he can't play center back. He's too weak and tactically erratic if you get what I am saying. Watch the second goal conceded. But he is very quick and can sometimes come in clutch. I think he is a great super sub tbh. But we need a smart defender. Toby was a very smart defender and I think VVD can be that smart defender. We neeeeed him. That is all. |

We need to build confidence.....we just barely lost today and I am sure that Korean said that in the post match talk. That should relax us and build confidence. We can go in to Monday Nights game aiming to win. Hopefully the injuries aren't as bad. I'm happy that the players are not being stupid and making injuries worse. These are the darkest times of the season so far and hopefully we can see the light at the end of the tunnel sooner rather that later. |

Yea I think since we had Shane in at CAM we kind of dominated them. This in turn caused our line to be high allowing them to go in for the counter which led to a goal. Aston Villa weren't going for the win. Instead they went from the tie....from the beginning of the game. We posed the ball a lot so there are only 2 ways to score. 1. Play further back. With Jack cork in CM with Schneiderlin, and Wanyama, we play deeper forcing the central area to push forward allowing Graziano more space to score. The other way is to play direct which is how we did towards the end. But all in all the goal shouldn't have happened and I'm sure Koeman will have a better explanation for saints and we can work out the kinks and be ready for our game against Manchester City |

What we need is to come in to those games in form and with all of our players back from injury. Then we will have the depth and confidence to win. The Leicester City and Aston Villa games may be more crucial than the games with the those "big clubs". Still need to win them all though. |
