I’m not sure about the last statement. Sunderland were slicing us apart minutes 10-35 and from half time to the red card. |

Sunderland fans might not agree, but I thought he pitched his tolerance of physical contact right and stuck to it rather than hopping about. No doubt about the red card and extra points for the early yellow card for their keeper. |

Extremely impressive in the first half, always looking to get the ball quickly forward on the ground, seems to make his mind up before he gets the ball. Varane looked good breaking up their possession but dithered on the ball by comparison and wasn’t able to find players free. Morgan faded out after an hour but I imagine Marti didn’t think he had a better option. |

On that subject, I heard about an Australian singer who had a few hits as a novelty act called William Shakespeare. He had been leading a band but a producer asked him if he wanted to moonlight in a pub rock band half his life or did he want to be a star? WS had a couple of number 1s in the 70s before some unsavoury facts came out about his pursuit of under age girls. The titles of hits were a bit of a giveaway in hindsight, the other one was called “My Little Angel”.
He ended up sleeping rough in a hut at a bowls club before drinking himself to death. Still, he outlived his replacement in the band who died in a similar fashion but with a different status. Fella called Bon Scott. [Post edited 30 Oct 15:12]

History nerds might enjoy “Subject to Change”. Russell Hogg, who I believe is a lawyer not an historian, interviews writers about their books, including some big names like Frank Dikötter and David Grann as well as others as obscure as their topics. His interests overlap very nicely with mine, doomed explorers, strange religion and lots of Byzantium! |

Cheap no names have always failed me within a year, though times change. My Sony WF-500 airbuds don’t have noise cancelling, but they’re great for podcasts walking, running and in the gym and have lasted me about three years now without showing any signs of the battery life waning. About £40 now they have been succeeded by a newer model. |

Marti might say he was trying to boost his confidence by keeping him on, but it struck me as self-destructive stubbornness. Anyone can have a bad day, but the coach has to correct his own error by taking him out. |
