M’Bia’s main and primary position is as a defensive midfielder. Its in this spot where he is most effective. Strong physically, he is very hard to break down and will always give a commanding presence sitting in front of the defence. Its not just physically where he has strengths though, mentally he had proven to be one of the toughest warriors in Ligue 1. In addition, he is quite adept at playing in central defence, although this isn’t his preferred role. When Didier Deschamps was in charge at OM, he wanted to mould M’Bia into a primary central defender. But the player himself said he was unhappy about this, and indeed on the contrary wanted to become a more attack minded midfielder, targeting scoring more goals especially. The potential is definitely there that he could become more than just a defensive midfielder. Ideally in his own mind it seems he has visions of becoming a ‘box to box’ type player..........................cont

I foresee problems with this guy. Definitely been bought to play centre back which he doesn't like, only signed a two year deal which suggests he's going to basically try us out for a year and then move on if possible. Bit of an arrogant sod by all accounts. Problems on the horizon IMO. |  | | |

I've put the signing in the "extremely reluctant" file.
A two year deal had the alarm bells ringing moments after he'd put pen to paper.
Time will tell but a player who doesn't want to be here, shoe-horned into a position he doesn't like isn't the best of starts.
Hopefully that will improve as the season progresses. Looks a quality player on his game. |  |

yep 2 year deal so only see's us as a way to display himself in premiership before moving to bigger better club
which is fine IF he puts in a quality season for us and we sell him on for a nice profit
but what worries me is
A.DOESNTlike playing at centreback
B.WANTS to be a more attack minded midfielder
C.sometimes looks moody and depressed 
D.Needs to be wrapped in cotton wool
E.Will burn out if plays more than once a week
F.INJURED every Season!!!! has played no more than 27 games in a season

He may well be a bit of nobber but he is a very good player. Seriously awesome in DMC and at CB. A major physical presence too which we have been lacking. I think it is a bargain deal.
Tbh if he does play CB it will only be until Jan when Hughes will sort that area out once and for all. I reckon Mbia will have been sold in on that idea too.

Agreed, he may have his personal preferences around position etc but he has no history of going on strike or AWOL or causing fights etc - so why not give him a bit of credit for being a professional until proven otherwise? | | | |

I suspect the plan is for him to play at CB until Jan when Hughes will bring in Samba (possibly one other as well) then he can revert to CM. That may have been explained to him. |  | | |

Yeah I'd agree with you and Westbourne that that's the plan. It's even vaguely possible that Hughes will spend the next 2 weeks trying to get either Anton and the NZ bloke (had a blank) or Nedum and that same NZ bloke to gel.
Then play M'bia, Ale and Multigrain in a variation of the Spanish system Clive's mate Miguel was describing. (With the sixes and the eights and whatnot...)

Blimey, this site is so depressing.
Surely MH and M'Bia have spoken about what they plan as in his position. I am sure MH has not said he will play him in Midfield knowing he won't, just to get him to sign. Blimey, it does not work like that. Maybe we will play 4-1-4-1 with M'Bia just in front of the back four. Maybe he will play as a centre back, I am sure if he does MH would have told him this will be the case. | |

The M'Bia signing excited me but when I saw his interview in France before he boarded his plane he looked like he was verging on tears and was being sold somewhere he didn't want to go. And then after all that he signs for 2 years which means that after 1 (hopefully) good season we need to think about selling him on to avoid him becoming a free agent (unless an automatic extension is built into the contract). Wasn't the deal made mainly to get rid of Barton, rather than bring in M'bai? I think he's most likely just a make-weight until Hughes lands Chris Samba, or someone else if, or when, he finally gives up. That would explain why M'bai's contract is short. | | | |

Chris Samba may not be signed, and Hughes might have given up on him now. But it's clear he was pursuing him in the January window, and probably during the Summer too. We've all known for ages that we needed a big lynch-pin CB. So the late attempts to sign Dawson, and the (almost) last minute signing of M'bia suggest Hughes was after someone else in the Spring. I don't know that the comments about M'bai are negative. Only that it was done in haste, and out of necessity more than desire, on the part of both club and player. | | | |
