Former Saints Striker Could Be Coming Home !
Tuesday, 11th Mar 2025 09:10

Virtually every transfer window over the past couple of years has seen the rumour of a return to Southampton for Danny Ings, it seems that this summer will be no different.

givemesport.com are reporting that Saints are looking to bring back Danny Ings to score the goals that will fire them to promotion back to the Premier League next season.

Of course this isn't the first time that Ings has been linked to a return to St Mary's, barely a transfer window has gone by without the same rumour since he left the South Coast for Aston Villa in the summer of 2021.

Then he was at the peak of his career and Saints pocketed around £30 million, although a portion went to his former club Liverpool.

Since then though, what he hoped would be a high profile move which would lead to him playing for England in the 2022 World Cup has gone very sour.

At Villa it never really clicked, although his record of 13 goals in 48 games wasn't bad, meaning that when they decided to cut their losses after just 17 months at the club, they did find someone willing to pay a decent fee, although the total fee paid of £15 million from West Ham United was only half of their original outlay.

But his time at West Ham has been an absolute disaster for his career, although during the last 2 years he has seemingly had many clubs including Southampton interested, but hasn't been willing to give up his extortionate wages at the London Stadium.

In two years he has started just11 Premier League games for the Hammers, plus another 41 as sub and has scored just 4 goals.

He has been fit and played a fair chunk of games, it is just he hasn't been picked.

Now with his contract due to expire this summer, it seems that his agent is getting to work, it is said that Saints tried to get a deal over the line to bring him back to St Mary's in the summer, but couldn't get it done for whatever reason.

Ings will turn 33 in July and although that is a good age for a striker, given his lack of game time over the past 3 years or so, he will perhaps be in a better physical state than the average player of that age.

Indeed over the past 10 years due to injury not being picked he has managed just 128 Premier League starts, plus another 77 off the bench , almost half of these were made in Southampton colours.

So if Saints can bring Danny Ings home, then this could be a good piece of business for the club.

Absolute joke, his legs have gone and has been a nothing for years now. What on earth makes you think this will be good business for the club? The Chsmpionship is far more physical and demanding than what the likes of Ings can cope with. He is just about fit to play 60 mins in league 1 games and in any case, why bring in someone who can play in the Championship but not the Prem. Another Armstrong scenario and then if we did get promoted, we’d have to find new strikers again, who haven’t played with those who came up.. in other words more gambling.
The answer is to recruit players who are good enough to play in the Prem or have the potential. We already know the answer with Ings and Armstrong. Shearer would give us more minutes than Ings and why bring back someone who caused our decline by being greedy and going for the extra few grand rather than become a local hero.?
No thanks, hobble on..

We still have one of the Championships most prolific strikers on our books in Adam Armstrong Add BBD into the mix and give our academy products a cracking
Surely Spor can do better than Ingsb

Recent history with Theo and Adam suggests that ageing heroes are best left elsewhere. For this to have any chance of happening Ings has to accept he is finished in the top division. I suspect there will be some lower half or newly promoted Prem teams who might be happy to meet his wage requirements.

Danny Ings has never been adequately replaced after falling out with Ralph H; When he was fit he was a great asset to the club and has ben badly missed; If he was to return his wage demands would be significant and there would always be a question mark about his ability to stay fit and free from injury; Nextwe shall be hearing that Ward Prowse is coming back. Neither Ings nor Ward prowse have ever been effectively replaced and the club could do far worse than bring bioth of them back! We dont seem to have any Acadmy players worthy of the position and the forward we do have would be best served by being given a chance to play in Divisions 1 or 2.. mind you the way we are going tat could be us in another season's time;

I note the nay-sayers were first to the board on this one. Yes- we know age is against him but it would be the last chance for Danny to play at a decent level, as no other Prem. side will look at him at the end of his contract. History says that older players are desperate to get game time (even if it's only from the bench) and I can think that he would be pleased to get his last contract with a club which he has admitted is close to his heart.

IF.. we are to make a good, early showing next season we need an experienced striker who can deliver and play alongside some of our younger talents. Danny almost single-handedly kept us from relegation (back then) whilst scoring 20 Prem. goals playing in a squad that was almost as poor as the present one, and had little help from anyone else.

The expenditure on Archer and Brereton-Diaz has shown little result, and we are unsure where Adam Armstrong will be playing next season. We will surely have a total turnaround in playing personnel and the new faces will need an established name to lead the line.

I wouldn't expect to see him playing 90+ minutes for 46 matches (plus those cup games)
but at least we know he can be a game-changer and with no fee involved he'd be worth the salary -even if it's not Prem. level. He knows the club well enough that he wouldn't need a taxi, or a GPS to find his way to Staplewood. I don't blame him for his moves elsewhere, careers can be short and neither of his moves did him any real justice.

Given out current financial situation, and the investment that will be needed after our relegation, I'd say that this particular deal would be a no-brainer.
