Southampton Close To Two New Signings
Monday, 20th Jan 2025 08:41

This will be a difficult transfer window for Saints, it will be hard to sign Premier League standard players, given that we have no chance of staying up in the Premier League. But we can concentrate on next season and there may well be incoming this week.

TBRFootball is reporting that Southampton are close to the signing of Albert Gronbaek from French Ligue 1 side Rennes.

The 23 year old Danish International is an attacking midfielder who joined the French club last summer for a fee of around £10 million from Rennes.

He started his career for AGF in his native Denmark and his form there earned him a move to the Danish top flight with Bodø/Glimt where he forced his way into the first team and enjoyed 3 successful seasons, before his transfer to France.

Initially it went well, but after the manager was sacked in November, the new man was not wanted by incoming boss Jorge Sampaoli.

The deal is said to be initially a loan deal with the option to buy and that sounds a good deal for Southampton who will get a player who has already played 189 games in all competitions for his 3 clubs, scoring 40 goals.

But it seems that Gronbaek might not be the only man swapping Rennes for the South Coast, Saints are said to also be in talks to sign Glen Kamara, a name that Saints supporters might know more of, Kamara at 29 years old has extensive experience in the UK, starting his career at Arsenal before heading to Scotland, firstly at Dundee and then 5 seasons at Rangers, before joining Leeds United in the summer of 2023 and played in 37 of their 46 regular season games, plus all 3 of the play off games where as every Saints fans know, Leeds lost 1-0 at Wembley.

He is another that has been seen a surplus by the new manager and so the 65 cap Finnish international is said to be in talks with Southampton, although no agreement has been reached, as it has been with Gronbaek.

These two sound like good investments as we lack both "bite" and creativity in midfield , and almost no-one in MF seems to show any consistency, except perhaps for Fernandes.

Your comments about the Dane (Gronbaek) makes him look good on paper, but his playing history includes Bodo/ Glimt who I think ...are a Norwegian club (?) not Danish.

Why are we not apparently trying to sign the Corinthians striker that we were supposed to be close to in the summer. Seems Sports Republic have still not learnt their lesson.

Its hard to get excited about any news about Saints signings, as we never know if they are for Saints, Goztepe or even Valenciennes ?

I am just so used to Sports Republic and Rasmus Ankersen's recruitment record to date, that I just expect more dross or crocked players to arrive. I hope they prove me wrong, but their record to date, suggests it will be more of the same.

(to City boy) I don't think you're alone with the comment about SR's transfer policy.

We see that EVERYONE (in all 3 clubs) are de facto employees of Sport Republic and buying in players "in Saints' name" makes sense as those good enough for English football can stay, whilst others are loaned out to cut their teeth on European football at " at a lower level ". Anyone who " makes the grade" may return to Saints - effectively for almost nothing - as they are already contracted to SR. The " Saints signings " who were loaned to Gotzepe in the summer have done well as that club is well-placed in the Turkish league.

We may eventually see one or two returning to us, but at best / worst they will have a career in a successful club, and everyone saves money on big transfer fees.
