Southampton Set To Keep Chelsea Loan Signing
Friday, 3rd Jan 2025 09:38

A couple of weeks ago it was odds on that Maxwell Cornet & Lesley Ugochukwu would be recalled by their club's, but now the situation seems to have changed for one of them.

Adam Blackmore has reported on the situation after speaking to Ivan Juric and he had this to say on X:

"@AdamBlackmore
#SaintsFc boss Ivan Jurić just confirmed to me that Max Cornet will head back to West Ham this month - no shock there !

However, Lesley Ugochukwu’s future at Saints is now brighter under Jurić and the manager says he’ll stay as things stand - Jurić certainly rates him"

So it seems that Maxwel Cornet is surplus to requirements, but Big Les could well stay and play a key part in the season, even though the fact is that Russell Martin's failure to utilise many of the players who arrived in the summer, both on a permanent basis and on loan, has been a significant factor in why we lost so many games.

Whilst it cannot be denied that many just didn't perform well earlier in the season, Big Les's outings in the last 3 games have shown that in some cases at least, that is not been down to ability, but the manager & his tactics, in truth it is easy to point the finger at some players such as Cornet and say it is poor recruitment, but in Cornet's games for the team in the Premier League, he was no worse than most of the players around him.

It is now emerging that Russell martin seemed to make quick decisions on whether he liked a player or otherwise quite quickly, if he liked you, then you were in the squad, if he didn't then you were ostracised, players like Charlie Taylor with a Premier League pedigree, do not become bad players overnight, but clearly there was an issue there with Russell Martin.

I think he’s a fantastic player dropped into a tough situation. His physicality stands out and already shows he can boss a midfield. If we brought back Charles and loan out Smallbone, we’ll be a lot stronger in the middle of the park and can then pick up results with the addition of a good striker on loan.

One man's meat is another man's poison they say Hopefully captain Jack will go the other way
Big Les did have a tendency to give the ball away with miss directed passes or by getting caught in possession Perrhaps playing hoof ball will suit him but he will want out when we get relegated
See Dom Ballard is back in the fold Why not give the lad a chance in the PL to prepare him for the championship or if he scores a couple his value trebles
