The Dutchman who will turn 23 in December has yet to play a League game for the Reds, although he has played 4 Cup games.

He joined Liverpool from Zwolle in his native Holland where he made 22 appearances in the Eredivisie, prompting Liverpool to sign him in June 2019.

Primarily a central defender he can also play at fullback.

He hasn't spent a lot of time at Anfield though, in February 2021 he joined Preston North End in a loan deal that was extended to encompass the following season, seeing him rack up 61 Championship games in the process.

He then joined Schalke for the 22/23 season but a serious ankle injury saw him miss most of the season and he played just 9 Bundesliga games.

last season saw him a Mainz and things went a lot better there, playing 33 times in the Bundesliga.

Van Der Berg is at a crossroads in his career, as he enters the last few months before he turns 23 he has over 125 League games to his name, but none have been played for his current parent club and he seems to be no nearer a breakthrough.

It seems at the moment that the agents of players on the fringes of the first team squad are working hard to get moves for their clients, Southampton seems to be an easy club to link a move to in the media.
