Premier League Fixture On Sky Golf Due To Long Ball Game
Thursday, 23rd Jul 2020 10:26

Sky Sports after watching Everton & Bournemouth's long ball game as employed against Southampton recently, decided that there was only one channel that could host the fixture between the two clubs.

Saints recent trips to Everton & Bournemouth saw both the home sides revert to a long ball game to try and beat Saints, a tribute to one of the best away sides in the division, time and time again the Toffee's and the Cherries tried to drive the ball down the middle but came up short on the short game when it came to putting the ball in the hole .

Indeed many of their drives ended up off the fairway needing the ball to be dropped back into play via a throw in.

Therefore when Sky Sports where deciding on which channel to show this final day fixture it was no contest and Sky Golf was selected.

There will be no Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher but Nick Dougherty Sarah Stirk and Robert Lee will turn their hand to football to bring an interesting take on the game.

The cameras will be behind both goals to get the birds eye view of the tee shots or goal kicks as they would normally be known and detailed analysis on the players swing and both long and short games will be available rather than possession and shots on target, a stat that Bournemouth rarely trouble anyway.

VAR will not be controlled from Stockley Park but from St Andrews (the one in Scotland not Birmingham) where decisions will be made by the Royal & Ancient Golf club as to whether a ball is in bounds or out and free kicks will have to be taken from where the ball lies regardless if there is a tree, seat or corner flag in the way.

The first half will be designated a par three with three shots on goal the average and the second a par four.

If a ball is lost, a situation that frequently happens at the Vitality Stadium due to the small size of their stands then a drop ball on the half way line will be taken.

For those Everton & Bournemouth & indeed Saints fans not familiar with Golf phrases as usual we at the Ugly Inside are keen to assist in making sure some of the Golfing phrases that Sky Golf might use on Sunday so here is a handy guide.

1, Hitting a wood - This refers to the practice of kicking the ball into the Bullens Road stand at Goodison Park, in golf they say that in the woods it is 90% air, but in the Bullens Road stand the air is 90% wood.

2. Hitting an Eagle - Not relevant unless playing Crystal Palace

3. Follow Through - A rare event on a football pitch, but nearly achieved for Saints by Terry Curran in 1979 and Jason Puncheon 35 years later.

4. Foursome - Don't go there when talking about footballers after a night out. for golfers it has a completely different meaning

5. Gimmie - In golf it means a short putt not being asked to be made, in football it is the starting point for all players in contract talks.

6.Unplayable Lie - In golf when it is impossible to play a shot because of ground conditions or an obstruction. In football when a player kisses the badge and swears allegiance to his employer during new contract talks when both know he has been tapped up by Spurs.

7.Niblick - An old-fashioned Scottish term for nine iron or in football usually an overpriced player from Croatia.

8. Marker - In Golf a thin, flat item used to mark the position of a golf ball on the green to prevent your ball obstructing other player's shots, for Saints a thin tall item usually 6ft from the nearest opposition player that doesn't obstruct other players shots.

9. Ground Under Repair - In Golf an area of the course under maintenance and if your ball lands there, you can remove your ball without penalty, in football it is a sign at Fratton Park pointing out that it is falling down.

10.Free Drop - In golf when a player is entitled to make a drop without a penalty stroke, in football usually described when Pompey go into administration and then drop two divisions in the same number of seasons.

11. Fairway - The short-grass area between the tee and the green, in football used to describe the distance between Saints and Pompey in terms of league positions.

12. Links - A golf course on coastal terrain or in football when having the prefix "Missing" in front of it, it is used to describe sections of the Fratton Faithless.

13. Mark your balls - See number 8, but I would suggest using a felt tip pen as a biro is very painful

14. Sandie - A term used when playing for money, or allegedly Matthew Le Tissier's favourite karaoke song from the film Grease.

15. Smelly Disgusting Looking Tramp - In golf it is Adam Sandler's caddie in the film Happy Gilmore, in football it means an Antiquarian bookshop owner from Petersfield.
