Media reports are saying that Tottenham Hotspur do not have the cash to buy Pierre Hojbjerg and have offered Saints several players in part exchange with the cash element being minimal.

Spurs have been talking the talk in their pursuit of Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, but it seems they are unable to walk the walk when it comes to actually laying cash down on the table, with several media out lets claiming that Spurs have made a bid to Saints for the midfielder, but that bid includes at least two of the Spurs squad in part exchange.

The two players are not named but you can assume that one is Kyle Walker- Peters currently on loan at St Mary's, but it seems that Ralph Hasenhuttl is not keen on the right back as a replacement for Cedric Soares, Yan Valery having started both the last game before the break and at Norwich on Friday night where Walker-Peters was on the bench and only came on in the final minute as Ralph Hasenhuttl looked to run the clock down.

So if Saints do not want Walker Peters then Spurs are in trouble as it is hard to see even the second player offered in this bid let alone finding a second instead of KWP.

Saints will be looking for a right back in the transfer window and a central defender, do Spurs have anyone in those position they could offer who we would want.

Perhaps the fact that Spurs cannot put the money down should ring alarm bells to Hojbjerg himself, there is no money for Jose Mourinho to spend, if he is the number one signing God knows who else can be brouht in for a Spurs team that currently lies in 8th place 6 points short of the top four and that could get wider later today if Chelsea get anything at Aston Villa.

If Spurs do not qualify for the Champions League then they might be funding Hojbjerg from the proceeds of one of their big names who have been enticed away to one of their rivals in the top four.

For Saints it is frustrating to see one of their players being courted by a so called bigger club, but even more so when that club having unsettled the player actually hasn't got the money to carry it through and tries to brow beat Saints into taking players they clearly do not want.

Peterx added 08:54 - Jun 21 Puts PEH in an interesting situation, as teams that are obvious Champions League contenders (I don't put Tottenham and Everton in that category going forward) are not queueing up for him and he has already potentially turned off the fanbase by intimating he wants to leave. Maybe too soon to say, but with RH committing his future and with the team settling in to our system even more, we could be outperforming or at least matching Tottenham and Everton over the next few seasons. Also not too sure who Tottenham could offer us that we would really want, as Walker-Peters has not been getting starts which makes you think that RH does not rate him that highly.

A1079 added 09:40 - Jun 21 I am not a great fan of these part cash/part player deals because usually the club doing the purchasing tends to want to off load someone they don't rate or is peripheral to their needs. We need to make sure that we only agree to something like this if they have a player we really want or feels that can add to our first team squad. KWP does not appear to be one. If Valery can still be picked before him that says something. I would not say PEH has yet burnt his copy book with us, but the longer it goes on, the more difficult it will be for him to rehabilitate himself within the team or with the fans. Clearly RH has not given up on him just yet.

d_ember added 10:59 - Jun 21 I think PEH is OK, he has shown some ambition and as yet is not playing silly games. SFC have reciprocated, no doubt honouring a verbal agreement. He has remained professional and has not said he wants to move merely that he want to win things. If we look at the Spurs squad, who have they got that we want. Kane, Alli, Alderweirald, Sanchez all out of our budget, the real possibilities maybe LoCelso, Winks, Lamela, however they need to fit into the style of play. Lo Celso is one I would like but that would leave us still looking to replace PEH.

TimSaint added 11:22 - Jun 21 Spurs can't afford him ? It was recently well publicised that they took a £175m loan on cheap, so they do have the cash. Just another of Levy's attempts to get someone on the cheap, as he has done in past and don't forget he was furloughing his staff before public outcry. Jose has been saying all season that he has a small squad, so surely they won't want to let anyone go ? KWP arrived injured, but will be given a run this season, but not sure how good he is. The other players we would consider taking are those that they would want to keep. So unless Toby wants to come back, pay us in cash or do one. Perhaps PEH will soon realise that no teams in the CL spots want him and Spurs won't even qualify this term. In fact, he wouldn't make the starting XI of any of the top 8 or 10 teams in the Prem and if you were a fan of those clubs, would you want your club to sign him this summer ? Probably not. With us, he is at the right level. He needs to improve with us before even considering a move. He gives it away too much, rarely scores and has set a really bad example as Captain with his contract antics - waiting til just before restart to make his announcement, when we have had 3 months off. He needs to knuckle down with us, improve with us and see if he can help us to a top ten finish. Then when nobody comes in for him this summer, he should extend his contract with us for an additional 2 years (3 in total).

And, to be honest, is PEH that good? As a number of people have mentioned, no "guaranteed" champions league sides are sniffing around which speaks for itself. Boris1977 added 09:07 - Jun 22 I would have thought it makes sense to bench PEH for the rest of this season - we need 11 focused players on the pitch for every game. I know where we are in the football food chain but I am tired of how we are considered as a feeder club by clubs with more money than us and, even more disheatening, by a sizable minority of our own players with the same view. I'll reiterate - I know where we are in the food chain, but we are seen as a club that develops players for other teams, to be praised by pundits when doing well for us and in the same breath saying ' if they've got ambition they'll go to a big club'. What about our ambition ? We are never going to achieve anything while we are seen as the big boys academy. The summer of 2014 damaged the image of the club and the reason we have struggled over the past 3/4 years is that the team lost 11 of their best players over just a few seasons (5 in that dreadful summer) and continued to drip field our best players over the followings seasons. No other succesful club has ever sold players at such a rate but the genie was let out of the bottle in 2014 and we cannot put the lid back on now. I'm not going to make any predictions on individual players here but if we put together a decent team again, which we have the makings of, how many of the players will we be allowed to hold on to? And where does that leave the top flight future of this club?

SanMarco added 15:13 - Jun 23 I have thought all along that PEH may be ever so slightly deluding himself. He is a decent enough player for us at the moment (just about) but I don't see him getting a game in one of the very top sides. If someone (who though?) offers good money we should say yes. I have no gripe with him wanting to move on as long as he does it properly - but I think that is probably because I wouldn't be greatly upset to see him go. I honestly do not see a side who genuinely want to challenge for the top four having PEH at the top of their list.
