According to Sky Sports a deal for Quincy Promes is unlikely to happen for reasons beyond Saints control.

It seems that the issue with Saints signing Quincy Promes is not so much one of Spartak Moscow's asking price not being met by Saints nor the player being unwilling to join, but according to Sky Sports the fact that the Russian club are unable to find a replacement for him.

Sky say Saints have matched the asking price, but now Spartak are baulking at the deal claiming they want a replacement in place before they let him go.

They have had plenty of time to do so given Saints lont term connection to him, but they just don't seem to want to let him go as was evidenced from recent leaks to the Russian football media suggesting the Promes did not want to leave, later rubbished by the player himself on his social media.

So it seems that Spartak are trying their best to scupper the move, however it could be just a tactic to get a bigger fee, it will now depend on whether the player himself puts pressure on the club and Saints up their offer to persuade Spartak that it is an offer they can't refuse.

DorsetIan added 10:54 - Jan 31 Feels like negotiation tactics to me. Saints wouldn't just have been firing off offers into the ether. Must have had some indication from Spartak that they were willing to deal. Saints now applying a bit of brinksmanship of their own - saying that they're walking away now (can't blame them). Imagine both sides will now be waiting to see if the phone rings again... I'm not holding my breath, but I don't think this one is necessarily over quite yet.

Sanguin added 10:59 - Jan 31 I agree with Dorsetlan. But I also think that Spartak are in the stronger position, they don't need to sell as much as we want to buy. Saying that, our track record suggests that we will walk away from transfers we think are too expensive.

bigmart added 12:52 - Jan 31 Santos, I don't think Pelligrino has ruined Redmond. He was up against it from day one, the minute Puel compared him to Henry, it just gave the boo boys something to aim at. It wouldn't surprise me to see him go out on loan or be sold today, possibly to Leicester. After all, would you want to play for people that "boo" you onto the pitch. It's a shame as the guy could actually be quite good with some support. I'm hoping Pelligrino can turn it around but anything less than two wins this week, in style and I might just jump on the band wagon myself.

underweststand added 13:06 - Jan 31 Tried buying ahouse ...or a Rolls Royce?. and how much are you really expecting to pay? Seems like buying a footballer is much more complicated - especially if the "seller " won't budge on his demands, and we know our "ceiling " on such a deal. If Spartak were really serious about (maybe) selling Promes, they'd have a replacement lined up, but now it's the eleventh hour..they seems to be backing out because they can't replace him overnight - daft I call it. Sounds like a bit of a shame, but hats off to Saints for refusing to be blackmailed over the deal. Just because we sold VvD for such a large sum , it's also a sign to others that they can't expect to force our hand on deals. The only criticism might be ..why Saints don't appear (at the moment ) to have a plan B? We'll know the answer to that one by 11 PM.

DorsetIan added 13:17 - Jan 31 Redmond has scored 8 times in a total of 72 appearances. (0 in 21 this season). Is that enough goals? If not, is it enough games on which to judge him? Has he had enough time to adjust his game, or get his head together? I don't think Southgate helped picking him for England, and I don't think Guardiola did him any favours either. I really hope he improves but so far he's not delivered.

We admit prior to the window opening that VVD is leaving and how much money the deal is for opening up people requesting silly money for slightly above average players. Then we do not replace him wiht anyone or even appear to have a plan to replace him. It make #saintfc look an absolute joke and laughing stock. Do these so called Seniors not understand simple business ethics and process.......maybe it is the best thing for us to go down like we did before so it allows for all dead wood to be removed only this time from the management team and not the playing staff. Talk about hanging your manager out to dry.....WHay would any manager or decent player want to come now.....
