Saints V Athletic Bilbao ! Dan's Report
Monday, 8th Aug 2016 09:51

Our reporter Dan was at the game and gives us his verdict on the final pre season game against Athletic Club of Bilbao.

Southampton finished their pre-season in style with a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao making them unbeaten in their matches before the beginning of the new season.

New signing, Nathan Redmond had the best chance of the first half when he was played through into a one-on-one positon but hit the post.

Soon after though Saints did take the lead before half-time when Shane Long slotted the ball past the Bilbao keeper to give the home side the lead.

Saints continued to dominate throughout the second half with multiple chances that should’ve been converted.

The pick of the lot was probably when Virgil van Dijk made his way into the Bilbao box but a through ball to Shane Long was blocked.

New boy, Jeremy Pied impressed as he crossed to Charlie Austin who head just past the post.

The performance was impressive and gives me confidence for the game against Watford. However,a big signing (preferably a striker) needs to be made as more than one goal should’ve been scored today. Claude Puel did say in his post-match interview that another signing could be made next week.

Who else but Virgil van Dijk gets my man of the match for his numerous interceptions, arial battle wins and possible goal scoring chances.
