Saints legend Matt Le Tissier has revealed that Spurs were never likely to get Victor Wanyama after offering less than Saints paid for the Kenyan.

Speaking on Sky Sports transfer deadline day programme, Le Tissier gave an interesting insight into the speculation surrounding Victor Wanyama and a possible move to Spurs, a revelation that will dismay Spurs supporters who thought their club had some clout in the transfer market but are now finding out that their club was merely trying to placate them.

"Wanyama got a little bit unsettled with all the talk about Tottenham," Le Tissier said on Sky Sports News.

"But as far as I’m aware there was only one bid from Tottenham, which was quite a few weeks ago now.

"From what I’m aware, it was less than they paid Celtic for him so it was never going to be considered."

The worrying thing for Spurs fans is that Daniel Levy offered less than what Saints paid, even the most delusional Spurs fan would not expect to sign a player of Wanyama's class for less than he was worth two year ago especially after those two years saw him establish himself as a top Premier League player.

They will realise that their board was never serous about signing the player, but after wasting so much money on a series of flops over the past couple of years was loathe to pay out too much.

But there is finding a bargain and being realistic and Levy's tactics in th Wanyama situation will anger not only Saints supporters who even more so now see it as a blatant attempt to unsettle the player, but Tottenham fans who after a poor start must be worried that their club may struggle to better sixth place this season

LesVivian added 19:29 - Sep 1 Wanyama needs a spell trying to get his place back - I'd put Reed in front of him for a while, because if ever a player needs first-team action it's Reed! As far as we know he hasn't been crying to the manager, begging to go out on loan - that's loyalty! VW has played well generally, but he is not yet (if ever) a Champions' League player, because he can't pass further than 10 yards. With MS gone, he seems to think he can fill the place - he can't, he's a destroyer (a very good one) who needs to remember his role - win it, and give it to someone who can pass!

ericofarabia added 19:43 - Sep 1 Pretty much the same sentiment just issued by The WBA Board about the way Levy has been very underhand in unsettling Beherino (sp?) Very low offers, nowhere near WBA valuation, too late for WBA to make any other bids and still kept trying to unsettle the player. Be interesting to see what happens next as the players head is obviously elsewhere!! End of the day the coonts are happy to sign big contracts but not prepared to honour them.

A1079 added 22:40 - Sep 1 It appears that Spurs were not really that serious about getting the players they claimed to be after, and were not prepared to pay the price. So, what did they try to do, unsettle players in the hope that the player would force the move. Spurs behaviour or at least their chairman's behaviour should be looked into, though, I guess some would admire his nerve for trying. What of Wanyama? Well, he has blotted his copy book with us now. Made it clear he wanted to leave and was prepared to create problems for the club and his team. Even if it means biting our nose off to spite our face I would not be happy to just let Wanyama walk back in the first team. I would rather lose a game than let him think he can do what he likes without consequences. A couple of games in the reserves and then on the bench at best and see what his attitude is then. No doubt he will leave either later this season or at the end of it, but for now, he (and others) need to know that they don't always call the shots.

GeordieSaint added 09:45 - Sep 2 The Guardian reckons they were offering Lamela or Townsend on loan as part of the deal. That just about sums up some of their, and our, transfer dealings of the past few years. They sign Lamela for 26mill and us Wanmyama for 12 and he is being offered as a makeweight in a deal. Hilarious. I do like a lot of their homegrown players though and think Potch will turn it around there.
