Liverpool supporters are starting to rival their manager Brendon Rodgers in the desperation stakes as they publish rumours that Rickie Lambert could be heading back to St Mary's.

In truth the rumous seem to have little foundation other than it is generally accepted by the supporters up there that Liverpool's strike force needs a boost in January and that would of course push Lambert even further down the pecking order.

From the websites I have read the Liverpool supporters are not vindictive towards Rickie, they seem to view him as a victim of circumstance rather than an under performing big time Charlie as they see Mario Ballotelli. Although Liverpool fans cannot see why the manager would have signed him.

However they do not see him as part of any solution.

Therefore they are starting to put two and two together and make five, with rumours of the Anfield cub going in for Jay Rodriguez, they seem to feel that offering us Rickie back as part of the deal would be very attractive to us.

They seem to think that Lambert would get more game time at St Mary's than he would at Anfield and this is perhaps where their reasoning fails, Saints already have Pelle who certainly is in better form than Lambert, Sadio Mane & Shane Long also offer options up front and crucially all have been in good form and have scored in the Premier league this season.

Then there is the little matter of the type of player Koeman wants in his squad, he looks for players who offer him options, those that can play in more than one position and in different formations etc.

There are some that say Rickie can play in midfield, but the issue there is that we are overstocked in that department with everyone fit.

Of course Saints fans love Rickie Lambert and with good justification, he was the shining beacon as we came out of our darkest days, he was our talisman and he rarely disapointed, however in my opinion that is just why we should not bring him back to St Mary's.

We need to keep his reputation intact as a living legend here and I feel that if he came back he is more likely to harm that reputation than enhance it, the Rickie Lambert story at Southampton had the potential to end sourly, however it didn't and we should be grateful for that.

Lets keep Rickie's memory as it should be and should he be loaned out to another club in January when they play Saints lets give him a warm welcome, there are several clubs in the Premier League who could offer Rickie the type of playing style that would suit him and in doing so the chance to show he isn't quite finished yet, sadly one of those clubs is not Saints.

I admire Ricky but he had made his bed and I would suggest if he needs football he will need to go out on loan down the pecking order - Spuds, for instance, need a striker. Also all these Jayrod rumours - how in the hell is he going to pass a medical any time soon??

They would check to ensure JayRod would make a full recovery, not whether he is currently fit... Regarding Ricky, you're quite right, he is a living legend for Southampton FC. I would like him back, as I think he could offer something decent off the bench, but he would probably only get the same playing time as he currently does at Liverhampton so I don't think he'd want to come!

saintstowin added 11:37 - Nov 21 I’m sure Rickie’s the one we miss most and the only one we feel a bit gutted for that the move has not worked out. I wonder if it even factors in the decision-making of a modern footballer that they will probably go from 90 minutes to 5 or 10 most weeks if they’re lucky? It must be a totally different way of approaching the game and he’s clearly struggling with that aspect and how he’s being asked to influence proceedings. Oh well he wanted to move. I wouldn’t mind seeing him back, but that is based on happy memories and sympathy rather than thinking it would work out perfectly. For him to be nearing December without a goal would have been unthinkable in the seasons he has had with Saints and elsewhere. Home sweet home!

SaintNick added 12:33 - Nov 21 With injuries it is about insurance and a player recovering from an injury such as J rod has would probably pass a medical in the fact he would be expected to recover, but there would be insurance exclusions meaning that if he was not able to make a full recovery spurs or whoever would not be insured and would therefore have wasted a large amount of dosh. I dont think Rickie was looking for playing time at liverpool, when he went there he would have known the strikers they had and the oney they had, he knew that he was going to be on the bench at best

Apparently his finger slipped on keyboard when completing the transfer request paperwork in the summer and asked for Saints number 5 but meant our number 6 ;)

IWOZTHERE added 13:35 - Nov 21 I still think part of Brenda's agenda was to use Rickie as a cheap 'assist' with a view to getting Lallana and Lovren and he should be ashamed of himself for screwing up the bloke's top class career. I'd love to see him back but things have moved on. He ought to get away from that crowd of mis-fits and get his confidence back at a club which appreciates what a top player he is.

ChristchurchSaint added 13:53 - Nov 21 I think this is a "heart or head" situation. I would love to see Rickie back as a back up for Graziano, however I think perhaps we need to remember Kevin Davies. He came here and was extremely good. He was swooped away to Blackburn where it all went wrong (just as Rickie at Anfield), he came back to us and was not the same player as he was first time around. So as much as heart says "Welcome back Rickie", head says if we need a striker, let's look elsewhere.

SaintDownUnder added 00:44 - Nov 22 This is a classic international break story....... even if there was a shread of truth in it, you should never go back. i also think that whilst he did leave on good terms and was a legend for our club, his comments after about our 'ambition' were a little disrespectful. he should stick it out at Liverpool, he's succeeded at every stage of his career no reason why he shouldnt at liverpool too.
