Saints have announced that Mauriccio Pochettino has resigned as Southampton manager to go to Tottenham Hotspur.

In a statement issued at 17.50 this evening a statement from Southampton Football Club read.

Southampton Football Club has today accepted the resignation of First Team Manager Mauricio Pochettino, and concluded negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur over his appointment as their new manager.

Assistant First Team Manager Jesús Pérez, First Team Coach Miguel D’Agostino and First Team Goalkeeping Coach Toni Jiménez have joined Pochettino in departing St Mary’s.

Chairman Ralph Krueger commented: “The Club has been on a constant path of growth since the arrival of Markus Liebherr in 2009. This growth took place before Mauricio came, it continued strongly under his leadership, and it will continue into the next season. The Board’s job is to find opportunity in this challenge and to continue to move the Club forward.

“We have begun the search for a new high-calibre manager. We will be looking for a manager that shares our values, our principles and our philosophy; a manager who can continue to grow the First Team and build on our strong foundation — a foundation led by an ambitious vision and plan that continues to build on our world-class academy, our amazing 129-year heritage and our excellent staff, and rewards our loyal and passionate fan base.”

montecristo added 18:42 - May 27 inevitable consequence of having a lame administration at the club. I just wish Poch could have taken Krueger and Reed with him. I truly miss Cortese.I absolutely dread what these two clowns are going to be up to this summer. but the reality is that Liebherr can realise 120 million from player sales this summer and sell the club for a further 100 million a very tidy return on her fathers investment.A really painful summer ahead for Saints fans and I am truly sorry , we deserved better than to be betrayed like this.Poch has left for the same reason Strachan left a failure to invest in the clubs future adequately.

IanRC added 19:59 - May 27 A little harsh Montecristo, I am not sure that Pochettino would have stayed even if Cortese were still here. Pochettino seems to be an ambitious idiot swapping a vibrant squad of young players for the overpaid mercenaries at Spurs together with their megalomaniac chairman. If the new appointment is swift and high calibre we may yet avoid a mass exodus. Certainly if I had our young players interests at heart I would be telling them to sit tight for the time being and see what develops. I do not think Pochettino is that big a loss if the replacement is good look at his blind spot about Jack Cork and his Osvaldo signature. We will see if Katharina decides to cash out but I would be surprised if she did given her actions to date. I don't think we should make up our minds before the new management team have even had the opportunity to show what they can do.

SaintNick50 added 20:07 - May 27 I don't want to diss Poch just because he has gone, but Nigel had already turned things around before he came (maybe thanks to Corky recovering from injury). Nigel did not have a plan 'B' and nether did Poch. Having said that undoubtedly a talented young manager, as to how he will do at Tottingham who knows, remember Glen Hoddle. I would have had Hoddle back, not so sure about Poch. We are bigger than any one man, keep the faith lets move forward. My own personal choice is Tim Sherwood, very hard done by and did quite well at Spurs. An up and coming English manager. And why aren't we buying Tom Ince? Long live Katharina!

Wait til MP sees what's waiting at White Hart Lane: a bunch of lazy players just cashing their checks and a chairman who overpays for those players and then fires the manager to save himself every six months. Spurs have already gone through better managers than him.

cheltenhamsaint added 23:54 - May 27 A fan of MP and not sure he has made the right decision. But he has gone and now I can be neutrally critical of his abilities and what he achieved for us. Expect me to be supportive of the new manager long after others have started to complain about only being a top six side with no ambition for winning the Champions League.
