How much did we cash in on Stewart?
Things ARE looking good at Loftus Road prior to the start of the season. I'm not so worried that most fans seem to be (including NW) about the options up front. I've got faith in Helguson and German. But the central defence, that's the part worrying me. I'm not entirely sure NW has made up his mind just yet who will play. With Hall unfortunately selected captain, he will probably start. Next to whom? Conolly, did he squander his chances during the Plymouth friendly? Ramage? Gorkss? Oh, I so wish I had a hot line to Warnock so I could recommend him two classy Swedish central defenders: Mikael Almebäck, 21 (Örebro SK; £1000.000 and Niklas Backman, 22 (AIK; £500.000). |

A class act up front is Swedish starlet John Guidetti, currently at Man City, without any hope of seeing much first team action. I have seen him play four or five times this season while he was on loan to a Swedish premier division side. He was absolutely outstanding. Hard working, strong on the ball, technically gifted AND with an eye for goal. A season-long loan contract with a view to tie him up would be ideal for Rangers. He's a striker who would score 15-20 goals at Championship level, definately. He is merely 18 years old, but he is very mature and composed. In Sweden he is considered to be the most promising young striker since Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Does Neil Warnock know about Guidetti? Unfortunately, I don't think so. |

On Stewart, I'll have to disagree with you. He is pacy player, but that's about it. We've had our share of central defenders being all over the place: Danny Maddix, Steve Morrow, Matt Rose, Steve Yates... Damion Stewart is well down there with that bunch, in my opinion. |

Middlesborough seem to be the winner so far in the off season. Nicky Bailey and Kris Boyd. I wonder, will we ever make that kind of signings? I've followed Rangers since 1987, and the summer period has never been a party. |

I apologise for the lack of coherence in my first comment. When it was written, I had had a few of those cold and soothing Heineken. Clive, your arguments make perfect sense; and as always, your thougts and your words are clear, coherent and spot on. My comment was a poor one - in many respects.
I do maintain though, that the likes of Vieira - as mentioned above - represent what we mean when we refer to a classy defensive midfielder. Vieira had it all, and you can't expect Rangers to bag one of his caliber. But still, we should be able to do better than Derry (unless I'm mistaken about him). And if we don't, we should walk the path that 'derbyhoop' implies: rely on our own young products already at the club. |

As often as I may agree with you, Clive, I have to take another stand on this one. I don't agree with your idea, that football supporters rarely understand the importance of a slow, hard-working and -tackling central midfielder with poor technical abilities and a restricted split vision; and that experienced managers often see something in them which the public don't (If I even understand you correctly). I think there are plenty of midfielders out there who master a multitude of situations in a match. I would even go as far as saying that Rangers could have had a defensive midfielder who would outshine Derry at his own game: the getting stuck in-kind of game, and furhermore, could master the art of passing the ball, reading the game like a 'regista' and being pacy and agile. We could have had an Isaiah Osbourne, a Jason Jarrett, an Owen Garvan, a Neil Danns or even an old-timer such as George Boateng, who's contract expires this summer. |
