Simpson to be the catalyst for U's chemical reaction against the Sulphurites
at 17:50 21 Jan 2025

I think something along these lines is far more likely. If we haven't picked up any injuries or illness I expect Terry or Hopper to be replaced on the bench by Simpson.

He was only 19 then as well. Played in the same team as Iandolo, Hunt and Payne so at least a few of our players should know what he's like. He's still a young player and could turn out to be a really good signing.

Because he was in the crowd at the Bromley game watching the mighty U's instead.

Signing announcement incoming.

Looks to have been a promising youngster but career has stalled slightly. Where better to re-ignite it than Col U?

Teams play out from the back all of time in the modern game. I went to watch Tottenham V Liverpool last week and both sides got themselves in a mess multiple times in the game doing it. If the best players in the country mess it up on a carpet like pitch what chance has a League Two player got on some of the surfaces we have to play on? I'm personally not a fan of it, especially at our level, but did watch a piece Scott Lindsay did on it that kind of made sense. I can't find it but did find this which is is an amusing watch:

I think managers and coaches accept that it's going to go wrong and they'll concede goals from it but overall they'll get more goals and wins playing in this way.

But you're only picking the last four games because it helps with your narrative it's also 9 goals conceded in the last 13 matches. You can pretty much make stats say whatever you want them to. Also amongst those nine goals was a debatable penalty and two goalkeeping errors, it's not like we're suddenly gifting the opposition chance after chance. I don't think we've suddenly become a team that can't defend, the goals conceded over the course of the season suggest that we're better than average when it comes to defending. And we definitely need a forward or two and I expect them to arrive in this transfer window.

We've literally just had a run of seven matches without conceding a goal and only eight teams in the division have conceded less goals. Does that not suggest that we've got a solid defence and a sound goalkeeper? Macey made two big errors against Cheltenham, I'm not disputing that, but let's not lose sight of the bigger picture here. For me, we were the better side last night and didn't deserve to lose. We're very close to being a good team at this level, we just have to stick with it.

Got to keep Cheltenham guessing haven't we? I think most managers and coaches keep their cards close to their chest in the pre-match stuff.

Yes, probably a good thing right now although I'd still sooner be travelling up to Anfield to play Liverpool.

We have 5/6 players injured currently. I expect there will be arrivals in January. Who and when is the big question.

I'm pretty sure if we were signing Tom Nichols it would be met with plenty of derision from the fans.

Whilst not ideal if Donnelly goes we do have decent replacements in Goodliffe and Kelleher. McDonnell would be a far greater loss right now.
