Oh well.
at 18:06 26 Jan 2025

It seemed to me there was a tactical tweak in how we set up. Morgan was playing wide right to support Smyth, possily to leave Dunne deeper at RB to nullify a perceived threat there.

If so, and I may be wrong, it didn't work. We missed Dunne ranpaging down the right and maybe more importantly also missed Morgan buzzing around centrally getting in the way of Bannan and Charles or offering forward options.

Our most glaring weakness was not finding the passes through midfield and just shifting it between CBs. One of the ways we'd improved on the recent run was having Morgan's mobility and passing in that position.

Anyone else see it this way?

But as others have said we were going to lose at some point and we just move on.

If a miracle happened and we went up via the playoffs
at 10:01 20 Jan 2025

I want us to win every game, so we could end up (miracles do happen, maybe?) being promoted, but I don't want a season in the Prem where we lose almost every game.

Some teams are clever and plan for the 3-4 years:
yr 1 get promoted,
yr 2 use prem money carefully but prob get relegated
yr 3 get promoted with a stronger squad
yr 4 having used 3 years of prem money (2 hrs in prem + 1 yr parachute) we have a much better squad and stay up. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

This may have been the Burnley model somewhat messed up by Company leaving, but still likely to get promoted again.

Injuries
at 19:15 30 Dec 2024

One of the other differences now compared to the glory days, which is different to training for a marathon or even a series of marathons, is pressing and the need to sprint multiple times a game. I know we have players unfamiliar with the concept of sprinting, but they will be moving quickly to cover space (hopefully), block shots of tackle.

Before the days of pressing players had longer periods when they could take a breather. Did Geoff Hurst, Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker etc ever press? Rarely.

A very talented youngster who's lost his way and maybe we can get him back on track? Or the next Ravel Morrison!

Final play-off spot
at 12:27 22 Feb 2021

Although it's wonderful to see the Rs grabbing 3 points with unaccustomed regularity there is an element of lady luck evening things out. On that bad run we weren't as bad as results suggested - I know in general results don't lie - but there were green shoots, esp in our defence - Dieng and Dickie are a huge upgrade. The recent run isn't probably as good as it seems despite the obvious contributions of Charlie and Johansen, but the opposition are making mistakes and a few things have gone our way.

An interesting test will be fatigue and injuries. Warbs seems to be getting players off quickly when they tire and talks a lot about needing to manage their fitness and tiredness. If he gets this right, and he does seem to be using the bench well, things may continue to go well.

Perhaps the bad luck with the Amos and Carroll injuries means we'll be spared any more long term injuries for the rest of the season? But that's the sort of fate-tempting statement I may regret.

Anyway playoffs here we come... maybe!

Dominic Ball : Club legend

Agree with most of this. Until we can go full Barçaball (although that's not wearing well at the moment) I can settle for Dom. I made him MotM a couple of games ago. He's one of those players whose errors get more attention than his positive play. He has certainly provided energy to our midfield on more than one occasion when others have looked tired or apathetic. His passing isn't worse than a number of other players.

Will be interesting to see how Field fits in longer term. People say he's got much more talent than all of our regular midfield, but I think he may be another Wells/Hugill loanee, who after a decent half season with us is priced out of our range.
