Does williams keep his job after this?

Never been much convinced. Should have gone after the WBA debacle.

Just as in the other horrendous performances we've put in against the basement sides this season, we're better than this. The manager isn't.

Eric Ten Haag from Temu needs to do one.

Cullen has had a decent (although fading) purple patch at #10, but he's no striker.

We've spent most of the season being sent out to play like we're wearing lead boots and it shows in that half. Cardiff out working and out pressing us despite their lack of quality. Being bullied where it matters.

We can, but claiming we can't is one of the excuses Labour are using to try and avoid one.

There's not a single benefit issued by the British Treasury that should not be means tested to one extent or another. It's a system that's been wide open to abuse for decades. For example, I know for a fact that until fairly recently people were receiving tax credits even though they had more than £100,000 in the bank because only income was considered, not assets or savings.

The argument should be about what level that means testing is set at. There are plenty of pensioners out there who simply don't need an extra £250 a year. There are plenty who do who have now lost it. Likewise State Pension, Universal Credit and yes, even disability benefits. We simply can't afford to keep paying out to those who don't need it.

Jay Fulton

Pleased to see a couple of people buck the trend.

Fulton is, and always has been, a decent player for us. Nearly 300 games over ten years in the two highest divisions of English football are testament to that.

His biggest problem is Matt Grimes. The two of them simply don't play well together, and whenever they do get paired up for some odd reason it's invariably always Fulton who gets the blame for the shitty display that almost inevitably follows despite Grimes being ostensibly the senior member of the partnership.

Truth is they're both much of a muchness in terms of style. Neither of them a highlights reel player. If we ever lost Grimes long term I'd expect Fulton to be able to drop in and perform largely the same job. Grimes' ceiling is higher but his failure to hit it more than a handful of times a season puts them in the same bracket basically.

It's not entirely shambolic ownership. Team management has to answer as well. Between Whittaker and Joseph that's potentially well over eight figures worth of attacking talent that Russell Martin had at his disposal and wasted. Yates' fan favourite status at Derby calls into question Williams' handling of him here.

That last one is one of the major reasons why I refuse to join in the criticism of Vipotnik and Bianchini, both of whom have shown in flashes what they're capable of and a more astute manager willing to utilise a less cowardly form of football might be able to harness more consistently.

It's absolutely true and a phenomenon that has been noted and reported upon numerous times. I'm afraid the old cliche about town centres being full of pissed up loonies every weekend is well out of date.

Pubs and clubs are closing at a significant rate because younger generations simply don't drink at the rates my and older ones do, and heaping costs on the industry that policies such as this do will only accelerate the process.

Mrs Winston's son will happily go to a house party with three small bottles of beer. Her daughter can't be pursuaded to even try alcohol. Just not interested.

Problem drinkers will not be dissuaded by policies like this as the stats from Scotland clearly show. The only people being inconvenienced are normal people and businesses.

Unfortunately the Troll does have a point (in a stopped clock style). We have signed far too many players in recent seasons that managers have petulantly refused to give proper opportunities to. Some have gone on to do well, spectacularly well in some cases elsewhere.

Kyle Joseph is the latest. Almost entirely ignored, sent on loan and eventually used as a makeweight, now on the verge of a £2m+ move back to the Championship.

We can't afford to keep throwing money away. If this means Williams is fully on board with who we're trying to sign it's no biggie. I can't imagine him not being near the players for a day or two would be detrimental in any case.

I've got no great love for Farage and Reform, but come the next Welsh Govt elections, if it looks likely that they can do some serious damage to the cretins currently in charge I might just have to consider a protest vote in their favour.

Wales can't go on with the kind of hectoring, smug, self satisfied, incompetent, arrogant useless Government it's had since 1999. I love the place, but if these people remain in charge there's going to be nothing left.

All this Budget Speculation
at 20:42 15 Jan 2025

Ultimately, most of this has its roots in the response to Covid.

The Goverment of the day committed Billions upon Billions of pounds to force people who had a 99.9% likelihood of nothing but a sniffle from the virus to stay at home. The economy ground to a halt. Government spending, debts and deficits spiralled for no real reason. Labour can claim no high ground because everything the Govt did, Labour wanted to do harder and for longer.

The Treasury printing more money to try and offset some of this led to the cost of living crisis as inflation spiralled. Goverment services are vastly more inefficient than they were in 2019 as tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of civil servants still sit at home watching Loose Women for 2/3 days a week.

The explosion in mental illnesses caused by people being cooped up indoors with nothing but their own thoughts for company has added Billions to the Welfare bill.

We need a huge reset. All state workers need to be ordered back to the office full time. People need to be at first encouraged, then if necessary forced to take steps towards coming off sickness benefits. Businesses need to be actively supported to take risks and grow. Spending in the economy needs to be encouraged. None of that will happen with the already implemented and likely future tax rises.

A report commissioned to provide exactly the conclusions those in favour of such a policy want will practically force them to.

New Match of the Day presenters announced

In a World where most of the important match highlights are available online within an hour or so after the game, the most surprising thing to me is that anyone bothers to watch Match of the Day at all.

I probably skipped through most of it to watch the Swans stuff when we were still in the Prem, although I can't remember any specific examples. Certainly I haven't bothered since we got relegated.

Lammy is the Foreign Secretary and a known moron. Probably doesn't help that the chief legal adviser to Mauritius on the deal is an old friend of Starmer's either.
