Any recommendations for the end of year list?

Mine:-

1) Arcade Fire - Reflektor
2) Sigur Ros - Kveikur
3) Johnathan Wilson - Fanfare
4) Daughter - If You Leave
5) Bill Callahan - Dream River

Maybe only Arcade Fire's album is good enough to be Top 5 material in a good year. Haven't found much I like this year. Any pointers?

Smith Westerns-Soft Will
Kurt Vile-Wakin on a Pretty Daze
Laura Marling-Once I was an Eagle
Arctic Monkeys-AM
Parquet Courts' album was released over here in 2013, but in America in 2012 if that still counts...

The albums by Jagwar Ma, Peace, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Melody's Echo Chamber, Fear of Men, Savages, and Connan Mockasin were all pretty great as well

Ah, good, recommendations. I've been trying to catch up on previous years, but of what I got that was released this year I'd include:

Mark Kozelek and Jimmy LaValle - Perils From The Sea

The National's album was good in the sense that it fitted perfectly into their usual, mumbly yet melodic template.

The Arctic Monkey's album started out solid but is continuing to grow on me a lot.

For a single song I think Neko Cases's 'City Swan' is a great song. Quite a good album too really.

Best Coast's album was good but maybe not quite as good as the previous one.

Good shout on Kurt Vile, Smoke Ring For My Halo was my album of 2011, need to give the new one a proper listen but like what I've heard.

I don't listen to new music all that much anymore, so couldnt throw much new stuff in, although Arctic Monkeys new album is strong. Also

Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City
Daft Punk - Random Access Memories (not always my thing but a good album)
Kendrick Lamar - good kid m.A.A.d city
King Krule - 6 Feet Beneath the Moon
Royal Headache - Royal Headache is an album I really enjoyed. Although that might have been a 2012 release....

Good responses so far.

That Neko Case song is good. Very Rilo Kiley.

Will check out the Jimmy LaValle album. I like my Album Leaf.

And will get to the other new ones in time

Wasn't sure about AM when i first heard it but it's a real grower. Best album that I've heard this year but I've not been inspired to buy many new albums in the past few years, let alone this year, so I'm not in any position to judge this one.

Well AM was produced by Josh Homme, who should also be mentioned for QOTSA's 'Like Clockwork.'

AM was produced by James Ford not Homme.

I've just spend the last hour or two looking into all these. I got 6 or 7 great additions to the old CD library but may need to send extra funds to Xmas-present-buying neices and nephews.

Forgot Bowie's album was released this year-feels so long ago! Same with My Bloody Valentine's album is another superb album. Traams, Drenge, Savages, Joanna Gruesome and Yuppies' debut albums are all well worth checking out too. Can't wait to hear TOY's and Kevin Morby's new LPs too!

Josh Homme might well be QPR- but it's James Ford who's my brother in law!

In fact, I reckon Josh Homme is definitely QPR - he wrote a song about us rangers fans- 'everybody knows you are insane ....'

I liked amongst other things this year:

Bonobo - The North Borders

James Blake - Overgrown

Nightmares on Wax - Feelin' Good

Moderat - II

and not strictly albums but

Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Bubblers vol. 10

and Bonobo's mix from the Late night Tales series

I think 2012 had some better offerings to be honest but maybe I'm just getting more picky as I age.

Good shouts, Limehouse. Thought James Blake's second album was stronger than his debut - seems the Mercury panel agreed. Always enjoy Bonobo's stuff.

Other stuff I liked this year in a similar electro vein were:
Machinedrum - Vapor City
Jon Hopkins - Immunity

In terms of singer-songwriter albums, Pale Green Ghosts by John Grant definitely deserves a mention.

Yep another vote for the Bowie album here.

With you on Arcade Fire, saw them at the Roundhouse last week, they were great, a really good night. I also liked the new Vampire Weekend album too.

I also thought the Civil Wars album, imaginatively titles The Civil Wars, was good.

Ned, have a word with your b-i-law and see if he can sort out a couple of tickets for QOTSA at Wembley either Friday or Saturday this weekend please?
