Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? 18:34 - Jan 5 with 10591 views | Lofthope | Pretty little touches, never moves out of the centre circle,, stylish, great posture but actually contributes absolutely nothing to our game. Splendid, super, and armchair TV fans probably think he's great. A future career as a pundit, no doubt, beckons. Why else would he need to speak such good English?

Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 20:24 - Jan 5 by loftboy | Wilkins was a great signing for us, the couple of games he an Peter Reid played together was world class. |
Agreed, Palace away when they terrorised the Palace defence and then at home vs the SW6 pikeys when a very young Les Ferdinand wrote himself into QPR folklore. Was it Wilkins fault that Reid left ? [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 20:30 - Jan 5 with 1702 views | CamberleyR | It was Simon Osborn not Steve Hodge (who was always more of a wide midfielder) who he chose to pick himself over in the relegation season. I'll just add to the chorus of people who thought he was brilliant for us for four seasons from 90-94 and won't let the disastrous relegation season when he decided he wanted to manage and still play (94-95 he was mostly injured) cloud my memories of him as a player.

Is the correct answer. I remember being at a LSA meeting with the club when i asked why he was picking himself instead of the younger/better Osborn who had cost over a £million. His answer was 'its always nice to stroke your ego'. Great player/disastrous manager and a c*nt if you ever met him.AKUTRs Dave Thomas met him and asked him similar questions and his answer was 'show us how many England caps you have'.

Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 19:18 - Jan 5 by Lofthope | maybe, but not as finished as Wilkins was though. I will never forgive Wilkins for what he did to my club. Whether or not Wilkins was good before he came back (we can argue about whether Holloway's work rate masked Wilkins lack of movement) he was absolutely selfish in picking himself and it contributed to our relegation. He put self interest before the club. Never to be forgiven. Besides, you don't have to listen to Wilkins speaking for too long before sussing out that, for all that eloquence, there's not much of a brain there. |
What a really very silly post, you obviously were not watching QPR in those days. Wilkins was absolutely fantastic for us and loved the club to pieces. Admittedly his accociation with the scum has somewhat darkened the recent memory. Smashing player. Talking of old boys, who remembers the magical Trevor Francis and his few years at us. What a star he was...some amazing goals.
Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 20:51 - Jan 5 with 1651 views | wittle | wilkins was outstanding for 4 or 5 years for us and sir les owes ray for alot of his goals he bossed games at times and played it at his own pace.Sadly he will always be remembered for our disasterous relegation in 96.

Nobody could understand Wilkin's reluctance to pick Osborn over himself, Osborn was a class act (IMO). I think Osborn was moved onto Wolves in the end.

+1 None of which detracts from his importance as a player. And whisper it: when he was appointed as manager we were in free fall down the table, largely due to the sale of Wilkins and Clive Wilson. He took us back up to mid-table. Different story following season obviously. Up next: Gerry Francis saved us from relegation in the first season of his second spell as manager
Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 22:05 - Jan 5 with 1531 views | enfieldargh | wilkin's nickname b4 he came to us was the crab, especially for England when he always seemed to play sideways passes. By the time he came to us he had matured into a superb midfield general and having him in our team was the envy of many an opposition fan. can only remember him oozing class in our midfield. He was player manger under the cut throat Thompson era when the club was being stripped of it's best assets. Yes as a manger he didnt get it right but I don't blame him entirely for our demise at that time

Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 22:09 - Jan 5 with 1522 views | CheshireR | Wilkins was one of our best midfielders. I say that on the back of nearly 40 years of attending our games. The only problem was that he didnt realise when better options were available. If Francis had remained as manager Osborne would have played instead of Ray. He was a spent force by 96 - we knew it. He didnt.
Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 22:12 - Jan 5 with 1510 views | CamberleyR | Willo was still playing in the 94/95 season (remember his cool pen in the Cup run). His contract ran out the end of that season (which Gerry has to take some of the blame for, for letting him get to the last year of his contract).

Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 22:16 - Jan 5 with 1501 views | hoopstar67 | Ray Wilkins was a fabulous player for us, one of the best midfielders i have see play for us,controlled many a game for us, he made the team tick, one of the worst posts i have seen, idiotic, you really can't have watched him if you think he was rubbish.
Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 22:18 - Jan 5 with 1496 views | andygg | Lofthope you Helmet, Wilkins was fckin amazing for us, and the reason he didnt play Osborne, was because he was crap.

wilson as out of contract and i seem to remember wilson being offered a 1 year deal by wilkins in that doomed season gerry francis spurs manager offered him a 2 year deal so off he went to spurs was as bad a thing as sir les leaving not only did we lose a great leftback (rupert took over)come midfielder but our pen taker barker allen gallen all missed vital pens that season

Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 08:58 - Jan 6 with 1138 views | Metallica_Hoop | I don't Know about Granero but I saw Wilkins play many times in the early 90's and he was brilliant. The best passer I've ever seen in a R's shirt. Simon Barker and Olly were good foils for his game. He hit that old steward whith the grey hair who used to stand near the goal one warm up. He came over saying sorry and told him 'Thats the best shot I've had all season' class. Shame he was such a rubbish manager

'That' steward still works as a steward and must be in his late 70s now. His names Tom. Lovely bloke, used to be a caretaker on the Edward Woods Estate in the 70s and would always let us play football on the grass in front of the flats even when residents complained. He'd tell us to "go away for 10 mins then come back when I 've gone, I won't answer my front door for the next 2 hours now" !!!

Good to hear he's still around. He seemed ancient to me but I was only 14/5 or so then

Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 09:14 - Jan 6 with 1113 views | ozexile | Wilkins was a quite brilliant player for us. Controlled games from start to finish. Should have won an England recall the performances he was putting in.
Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 09:19 - Jan 6 with 1102 views | TheBlob | Always thought Raymondo was a watered down version of (a fit) Gerry Francis - extended to management also.No bad thing. The holding role in midfield spraying the ball around is so vital and Granero has that ability and vision. Not as good as Don Masson, but that pivotal role doesn't have to be spectacular to succeed.Raymondo was a top man.

Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 09:50 - Jan 6 with 1079 views | Ranger78 | I can't believe this post. Wilkins was a seriously high quality footballer who was brilliant for us. I'm not letting his poor management water down the way he was as a player.
Granero , the new Ray W@nkins? on 10:00 - Jan 6 with 1066 views | carrotcrunch_R | This thread is comedy he had numerous England caps and played in a World Cup he was an excellent player for us and his other clubs. One of the few to excel in Italy whilst most other top players that came from here at the time failed there. So you see his ability as a top class football is just completely unquestionable but as a manager he failed however he still would make a great assistant Imo as he is a good motivator especially for the youngsters.
