Thatcher's fortunes were turned around by her leadership around the Falklands and I think the country also liked the way she took a leading role in the Cold War alongside Reagan.

Are people feeling better disposed towards Starmer following his international performances over the last week?

Sir, you literally have zero arguing points. It’s just abuse after abuse. I don’t see you as stupid for having a differing opinion. But it’s tiring. Have a good day.

There are no arguing points you moron, Ukraine are defending themselves, Russia is the aggressor, that's it, what don't you get about that, fuçking clueless.
It's like arguing with a three year old.

Who is arguing as a three year old, him or you? Think about it. You are the one calling names and berating him for holding a different view, as a 3 year old would indeed do.

There you have it. You are the one acting like a petulant 3 year old. Try good old fashioned polite debate. It is easy and we all learn much more from it.

But I dislike Putin: a dictator whose army has committed war crimes. I merely disagree with the narrative of how the war began and want peace to stop the millions dying out there.

You're wasting your time. Unless you foam at the mouth when Trump, Putin, Farage, the Tories etc are mentioned, you're scum to these lefty loons.

The irony is that they preach about being kind, that they're good decent people fighting for the greater good, yet they spill more bile and hatred than anyone if you just so happen to have a different opinion.

The narrative of post-Soviet era aggressive NATO expansion simply ignores the fact that the countries that NATO expanded too, were extremely keen to get away from the orbit of Russia.

As I say, go to the Baltic States and tell them them that their aspiration for independence and to be part of a defensive block that would protect that independence from capricious Russian aggression/paranoia, was simply part of a grand geopolitical plan for US expansion.

Same goes for Ukraine. Why t f would it want to have anything to do with Russia, given its history.

And do you really think too that Sweden and Finland joined NATO as an aggressive act towards Russia?

The old rules of right vs left have gone out of the window, just as they did in 1939, when Hitler made a pact with Stalin, in spite of the fact they were at opposite ends of the political spectrum. Of course, they didn't really like each other and were destined to fall out.

It's about trade wars and real wars now and, as countries realign, another unlikely alliance of Europe, Canada and China is not out of the question. Putin teaming up with Trump, who is waging a trade war against China, is going to have them looking elsewhere for friends.

My opinion is that Starmer is grateful for an opportunity to play a role between two factions which should be on the same "side" but for various reasons are not presently. It's like refereeing a match between the first team and the reserves. He's grateful because it disrupts the relentless campaign from the right wing to throw rocks at his (short) time in office, whilst ignoring the utter shambles of their decade and a half.

Putin is emperor of Russia and he sees it as an Empire. He has made no bones about the "fact" that the republics who broke from the old Soviet union are "Russian" and he wants them back. He miscalculated badly by think Ukraine was an easy target and is now mired in a war that has destroyed the economy and has damaged his reputation. The state owned and run media in Russia of course claims otherwise but no leader who send his people into a "meat grinder" for years, can expect to be universally admired.

Trump thinks that geopolitics is just a big business and can be run as such with "deals" being done. He knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

He has surrounded himself with cultists who understand that disagreeing with the notoriously thin skinned Felon is a ticket to obscurity. He is also apparently willing to risk low poll ratings (he seems to attach such weight to these guesses) in order to enrich himself, his inner circle and his family (in that order). I read recently that only 4% of Americans approve of appeasing Russia. (I have not checked or verified that result).

In the present situation however he is correct that the war cannot continue. Absent a complete collapse of the Ukranian forces, this war will drag on. Even if the US withdraws support, Europe will make up some of the difference - enough to keep the conflict going for a decade more.

Ukraine will be forced to concede territory - the only question is how much. Does Ukraine actually want the Donbas and other Eastern provinces which were infiltrated by Russia for years and now lie mainly in ruins? They would need to say that they do, but really?

However ceding that territory to a dictator without some form of guarantee that when Russia recovers its resources and tries to invade the rest of the country, the whole of the western world will respond, is madness. That guarantee backed by either European nations paying more for defence and/or the US agreeing to be part of it is crucial. Without it, there is no advantage to Ukraine (or western democracy) in giving up the fight.

And therein lies the biggest issue. Trump is a toddler in terms of geopolitics. He is unreliable, erratic and likely to side with the last person he spoke with. he is not somebody you can rely on.

if there was a truce/peace and a Trump clone is elected in 2028, it is inevitable (in my view) that Russia would be firing rockets and artillery into Ukraine (or perhaps another former republic) by 2031, confident that a Trump/clone led USA would not intervene.

For me that the danger.

if Trump wants a peace prize, he's blown the Gaza route and therefore need Ukraine/Russia war to end. How strong is his desire to have that prize? Very but would I bet my country on it still having his attention in 12 months? Not a chance. (More likely that we will win the PL in 26/27.)

The extreme right and the extreme left are two sides of the same coin, it's why Corbyn and Galloway (extreme left) support Putin in the same way as Farage and Trump (extreme right) do.

Arriving hand in hand with the death of woke in the US and many Eastern European countries, arguably even Germany, is a new realism.

We've been used to a nicey, nicey, be kind to everybody, we're all equal approach to life in general for a couple of decades and Trump, the right wing in Hungary, Romania and perhaps even Germany are now saying, open your eyes.

People are different from each other and recognising that is not wrong.

My guess is Farage is just being careful not to say anything which would contradict his chum Trump. There is a massive dynamic at play amongst the various national populists to make sure that they are on the same page on various topics, including Ukraine. Giorgia Meloni is refreshingly different on that - she knows how important the defence of Ukraine is and has pushed back agains the Trump-like loons in her own country who don't want to support Ukraine.

As for Trump not fawning over Putin: all the evidence is to the exact opposite but if it makes you happy to believe that, fill your boots.

fawning: "displaying exaggerated flattery or affection; obsequious."

I'd say that's his attitude towards Putin.

But he's like that with all dictators.
