I liked his reasoning " 10 times as many people see a GP than go into secondary care, we have too many hospital beds "

Or in the back of an ambulance like my MiL this week for 24 hours. What world does this moron live in. Is he suggesting that we consolidate secondary care because we’ll know the end result of that, one huge hospital in Cardiff for all of Wales. And there’ll still be 12 hours+ in A&E.

We have too many... on 17:12 - Jan 23 with 666 views | Luther27 | We don’t have to many Senedd members though do we Mark. The idiot should be sectioned for our safety.
We have too many... on 17:15 - Jan 23 with 662 views | AnotherJohn | The reason many hospital staff give for the log-jam in A&E is the difficulty of moving patients into wards during times, such as winter, when a greater than usual number of people fall ill. They say it is a capacity problem. Of course, this has got worse as bed numbers have not keep up with population growth, meaning that it is not just a winter problem these days. The Welsh population is now about 3.330,000 and we have about 10,800 hospital beds available on average, That means we have about 3.2 beds per 1000 population. France has around 6 per 1000 and Germany nearly 8. The EU average is over 5. Admittedly, the general trend in Western countries is for a long-term reduction in beds, mainly because of changing technologies, but our numbers are right at the lower end of the range. During his academic career Mark Drakeford never conducted empirical research on the NHS; his social work/social policy background is no substitute for that kind of expertise. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Good post, 3,300,000 population, 800,000 on waiting list, 10,800 hospital beds, Drakeford's conclusion: too many hospitals.

We have too many... on 21:52 - Jan 23 with 468 views | majorraglan | He is right that most contacts are in Primary Care, but that’s a very simplistic way of looking at it things. It’s clear that many beds in hospital are taken by people who don’t need to be there, but as care in the community is really poor and there is nowhere for patients to be discharged to what does he expect? Carers get a poor deal and often, with house prices as they are, 2 incomes required to buy a house etc lots of families struggle to support elderly and unwell family. Maybe, if care was resourced properly we’d see less bed blocking and with advances in technology more day surgery etc etc and less stays in hospital, but resourcing care properly is years away. Too many hospitals, if we were a densely populated area like London maybe, but we aren’t, our population is spread overcast huge area and it doesn’t start and end in Cardiff. I wonder if he thinks we’ve got too many politicians or too many local authorities? Drakers just needs to retire and get lost - that’s the polite version!! [Post edited 23 Jan 22:31]

We have too many... on 10:24 - Jan 24 with 268 views | Boundy | Someone's personal story , one I suspect repeated every where in Wales . "This man & his Labour Party have run our Welsh NHS since 1997 & he now says there are too many beds and hospitals. This angers me deeply. Before Christmas I dialled 111 for a family member, explained matters & they actioned a 999 medical emergency. The paramedic ambulance advice was to go into hospital, but we were faced with the reality that there would not be a bed. Our family member would have faced at least 4 hours in an ambulance, possibly 8, with a trolley in a corridor if we were lucky. There were not enough beds that night. The vital signs were OK and we made the tough decision that our family member stay put in bed, after taking further advice. This was a risk, but a greater risk could have been the trauma of being in an ambulance for hours & then trolley. At home our family member had a warm bed, quiet, care and home comforts, crucially enabling proper rest. Thankfully, things improved and did not get worse. This was second world health care. I could sit for hours and quote more examples: possible death sentences through delay in cancer treatment, a second class & out day 'new' Velindre cancer hospital. So many of us go through really bad experiences. The situation is dire. Until people start voting against the Labour Party & the Uniparty system, nothing will improve. Where you have our candidates available, vote Propel for a change. I disclosed personal information here, but I don't want to talk more about it; thanks in advance for best wishes I know people would have. Things worked out and that's all that matters. A big thank you to the ambulance crew who attended. I just wish that the system enabled great staff to do their jobs properly."

and yet Morriston is the only 24 hour A&E serving this part of w S Wales , a total and utter disgrace and we have some bleating about trees and the Welsh language as being more of a priority for those in power.

That's probably why it's in decline then. Drakeford needs to go back to school.
