Swansea City v Stoke City : Match day thread 21:54 - Oct 2 with 11105 viewsModeratorC

In the blink of an eye Tom brings his cannons to south Wales, the man Leeds are now stating they wanted to sign, like a Michu to West Ham. The Potters are coming and not one of them is called Graham.

Lots of good chances today much better but I still think we are play by the numbers to create space we must play it this way, really think the reins are still being pulled in to ensure we don't lose our shape but it stifles movement, the number of times the wings would be opened up with better movement off the ball Stoke defense press so high there was so many chance for through balls that never came.

The last three home games could have been put to bed with better finishing but eventually I think the finishing will improve naturally as players bed in while also being allowed to naturally get into threatening positions. Game should have been won in that first half today.

Perhaps we should be blaming the person who has continually played people out of position instead of the players themselves.

It's not Abdulai's fault any more than it would be Eom's fault if Lukey decided to play him in central defence.

Yes to an extent. For the predictable and formulaic substitutions as well. Abdulai can’t just get a free pass every time he plays like that though. Out of position and not played to his strengths, but he’s still a professional footballer.

Latibaudiere made a much better fist of it.

Think most would say Latibeaudie didn't make a good job of it until he played in a team with a slightly different structure later on in Martin's tenure when Martin was forced to change his thinking
To get better positive results Williams eventually will have to tweak things or maybe the players will work out how to refine what Williams is asking of them as they feel more confident to adapt to things happening on the pitch.

I agree, but he did a better job than Abdulai is doing now.

Yes, the position highlights his weaknesses and negates his strengths, yes he’s young and his first senior season was more or less an injury write off.

But he’s got to do better than he has been surely? He can’t be absolved of criticism because Williams is playing him out of position.

Latibeaudie became the focal point of criticism by most of the fans on the forum myself included having to eat a bit of humble pie towards the end of his last season given the positive results even with his inclusion but that took just under two seasons to happen for him.
When Abdulai played at fullback behind Parker who was on the wing he looked assured having the ball in front of him maybe a bit to assured as Parker very rarely had the ball off him which mean Parker talents are wasted, a bit like Ronald with Key but I digress, he looked assured a different player to the one hemmed in by the touchlines and fullbacks and seeing very few options available to him because of lack of support through the middle, That lack of support is trying to be address as Grimes is being asked to push on or Key goes into the middle but coming on as a sub our shape becomes less defined and player are trying to do too much on the ball and end up looking bad were as a one touch game is needed at times to get you out of tricky or tight situations.
We seem to have players who supposedly have talents that have yet to be unlocked, it is still earlier days for Williams to unlock those talents, they may never be able to be used to our teams benefit because a player just doesn't fit in to how a manager wants us to play, I don't think Williams will be happy not seeing the progress within the team that he wants and will try different things eventually maybe to the benefit of Abdulai.

Latibaudiere looked like a utility defender who could do a job at centre back or full back being forced to play on the wing. Abdulai just looks lost out there. It’s almost a case of not knowing what he should be doing rather than not having the tools to execute it.

I’m not disputing that he did better at full back. I’m certainly not arguing with him as a central midfielder. I’m also not arguing that it’s not unfair on him or trying to justify why Williams keeps playing him there, I can’t understand it other than he’s an athlete and literally fit enough to see the game out.

What I am saying is that he should know when to cross, when to turn back and recycle possession, when to try a more progressive pass. I really don’t think he should be immune from criticism just because it’s not his natural position.

Hoping Williams won't go down the same rabbit hole as Martin, to be fair to Williams he has tried tweaking things in preparation to games and is still.playing things safe as when he trusted the likes of Naughton and Allen's experience to dig us out the relegation fear last year, small changes as Rome wasn't built in a day but he could do with someone having a word in his ear about one or two dull things we seem hell bent on doing.

For several seasons there have been posts on here crying out for us to play with width now we are some are still critical.
If ee want to play with wingers we need at least 4 currently Luke has inky 3 recognised wingers availabke due to injuries .

I suspect when Parker is fit then the Abdullai experiment will end ,its a shame Ginelly is a crock too.

For me we seem to be improving every game the lukes if Eom,Franco and Vip too are settling in andmlooking fitter
Its frustrating because as much as we are unbeaten at home had the last 3 games been converted to wins we would be in a playoff position had we drawn or won onnWenesday we could he sitting second....not bad considering so many were again stating we were prime relegation candidates before a ball had even been kicked.

It’s better. We’ve got more points than we did at this point in Martins second season. We’re streets ahead of his first season or Duffs.

We’ve got a weaker team than in any of those seasons and less strength in depth than I can remember, even going back to the lower league days when you could only make two substitutions.

Not to pretend we couldn’t do better or some of his decisions aren’t baffling, but this is actually the best start to the season, points and performance wise we’ve had since Cooper.

Low bar to set admittedly.

Morning
I accept what yiu say.
However, isn’t it odd ,that given our best start” crowds have tailed off significantly
We have sailed very close to the wind and have largely been saved by the young warrior that is much criticised Cabango and Darling not to mention Larry between the sticks .
Even with this squad,we could do so much better .

I agree we could do better.

My point is we are doing better than we have for quite some time, with a weaker squad. Dismissing Williams as a poor mans Martin is unfair.

Swap Piroe for either of our strikers and there’s a good chance we’d have beat Cardiff, Bristol and Stoke.

I fear for us next season if these jokes are still here and the squad declines further.

Decent reply
Frankly, right now,I’d take survival in the Championship
Maybe then, before a new season, new more energetic and moneyed owners come in and get us back on track
Sorry,but I see Williams as a Martin clone .

The reason we have lower crowds is because we have sold 4,000 less season tickets this year and has no bearing on the start to the season. It has more to do with us flirting with relegation last season, the lack of quality signings early in the window and all non Saturday 3pm kick offs being live on Sky. Spin it anyway you like to suit your agenda, but you can't deny the facts.

Season tickets or not, there have not returned . Yiu don’t need a ST to go to a game

We seem to have on the right a quality winger Ronald and a player in Key who would be suited to a wingback role they are not hitting it off together at the moment I think when Williams finds the correct setup on that side we could do some serious damage.
The same could be said about the ability to cause damage on the left I wonder if it would be better for Cooper to drop deeper in to the midfield, Eom to play in a role closer to our centre forward leaving Tymon to play a more advanced wingback role, at times the three get in similars roles with their rotation but the number of times our wings are overloaded with our own players are on top of each other and their path on the touchline block by both their own players and the opposition defenders and they need a clearer path down the wings with defenders being moved about more.

Match day ticket sales have not declined and actually increased, possibly down to ex session ticket holders buying tickets on a match by match basis. No you don't need a season ticket to attend but it gets you into a routine and a habit that once broken is hard to get back.

Why don't the club introduce half season tickets at rock bottom prices. £150 Adults, £100 Concessions and £25 for children. Make them available at the beginning of December to start Boxing Day against QPR. Perfect timing for Christmas presents. Just fill the ground out and if supporters enjoy the experience they will renew for next season.

True you don't need a season ticket to attend matches, but they are the nucleus of any home support.

Hey,agree with that .
I’ve read every word of that and concur
I feel fans are staying away because
1.they are not enthused with the produce . However, this can be overcome if they feel connected to the club . Now they don’t . We see nothing but obfuscation from the club hierarchy .
2. They want success ,some joy, some relief from the vagaries of life
3.Going to a game should be a chore or anything to do with “ hard miles”

It’s no more of a chore than it’s been for the last three years. Possibly fans have got slowly disillusioned over that period, but blaming the manager or the players for it is wrong IMO.

I don’t know if others would agree, but I’d say there’s more of a connection between fans at the ground and the team/manager at the moment. I haven’t heard a negative chant this season. People appreciate Williams has limited options to work with.

Quickest way to get bums back on seats would be to announce a change of ownership.

It's strange that the criticism seems to be on message boards, but supporters in the ground seem more tolerant and accepting of what the coaching staff and players are trying to do. There was also a lot of support for Tymon yesterday.
