Confession time.
The first time I went to a Saints game in the flesh it was a League Cup game in 1987-88 at Dean Court, as it then was.
For my sins, I was in the Boscombe end, and they won 1-0.
We drew the second leg 2-2 and were out.
Saints were very much my team, but in those days I was taken to watch Boscombe.
I don't recall things being particularly tribal between the two teams at that time, though others may recall differently. I was only 14 at the time. |

It was basically down to two things:-
- being an impressionable 6 year-old seeing Mick Channon do the windmill celebration on The Big Match. I was asked around that time by my Mum if I wanted an England kit or a Saints kit as a birthday present, and I chose Saints. Funnily enough, Bournemouth wasn't an option. I didn't start going to watch them until I was 8 or 9.

Lots of Saints fans come from Bournemouth (me included) as Saints were always seen as the big South Coast club!
Lots followed Phil Boyer and Ted McDougal back in the day, and of course Laurie Mac was a British household name and a big pull.

It's really not daft though, just shows how the two teams viewed each, and on our side it was generally a positive feeling towards them (and for me at least it still is).
I know this might sound weird but the fact the new forest is between us makes Bournemouth feel like it's in a different country to me, it doesn't really feel that "close", and you combine that with the fact it's in a different county, it's always been a nice town to go to and a very, very different demographic to Southampton and it's really hard to dislike them. |  | | |

Also the original county name was Southamptonshire which went west to bournemouth and christchurch and as far east as portsmouth.

I don’t see bournemouth as a rivalry, but there’s certainly something above the norm there. Many of the younger generation will continue to parrot the older generation in their “liking” of bournemouth, but I don’t believe it to be genuine.
They are annoying, local, and we have played them a lot in the last few years in tension-filled situations (2018 relegation fight game at st marys, 2020 relegation of bournemouth and 2023 when we lost on the way down). Similar to our games against Palace between 2018-22 as a game you can look forward to. But that’s my opinion. | | | |

Went to the '87 League cup game, remember after game a huge mob of us ran at a large group in the park outside only to realise when we got up to them they also were Saints. |  | | |

Tbh I never considered what they thought about us I just knew they were a small local team and I genuinely wanted them to do well because they were never anywhere near our level and never a threat to us. [Post edited 27 Sep 21:57]
