FA Cup 13:54 - Aug 2 with 8996 viewsterryb

It's back! The first of 241 Extra Preliminary Round fixtures take place tonight.

There are five games that stand out for me:-

Penistone Church - Charnock Richard (I just like the names)
Congleton Town - AFC Bury (possibly the biggest crowd & the tie of the round)
Virginia Water - Brimscombe & Thrupp (the Brimscombe name & picturesque ground do it for me)
Oldland Abbotonians - Amersham Town (ex Amersham player & I think they last played in the FA Cup in the 1969/70 season)

The last one being Thetford Town - Ipswich Wanderers (ex secretary of IW & as it is being played at IW I will be in attendance)

I do mainly lose interest in the competition once the qualifying rounds are completed!

Great news Chesham got through- pity about Amersham though. The only irritating thing about the draw will be the guaranteed w@nkfest for Wrexham and Birmingham .

Thanks Boston, I'd seen the goal (many times) but not any other highlights.

As expected from a Yeovil Town production, I'm told that this was heavily biased & that 0-0 was written all over the match! Climbed all over him? Nah, but I thought it should have been a comfortable save for the 'keeper.

Revenge for the 1-0 defeat in the First Round proper 1982/83. My memory tells me that there was major crowd trouble at Chesham, Slough (won at home to Millwall) & Wokingham (drew with Cardiff) that day.

Yep Slough 1 Millwall 0: 3 sent off (2 for Wall, including our former player Dean Neal), ‘Wall supporters ran across the pitch in numbers to attack the Slough fans, very late Slough goal to win it. Wall had Sam Allardyce playing for them too.

Cray Wanderers went out to Tonbridge 0-1 at their (packed out) new ground.
Blast, never will get to see them in the First Round and on t'telly.

Was at the game, gave it a really good go at the end but Tonbridge just too strong. Fiver for a pint and a decent choice of local beers though, nice day out

Always hope for Bristol Rovers away when QPR are drawn and never get it, one go with Weston-s-Mare (I watch them regularly) and we get them! Good West Country derby!

One my favourite grounds in my half-hearted attempts to do the 92. They aren’t averse to an embarrassing home cup defeat either.

Northampton v Kettering an interesting one.

Can’t imagine they’ve ever played each other competitively before, despite the proximity of their grounds.

Edit: yes they have, 1989 FA Cup

They made comment to their being 8 previous FA Cup winners in the draw.

I'm assuming they are counting eirther MK or Wimbledon as I could only come to 7 - Blackpool, Bolton, Huddersfield, Bradford City, Notts County, Wigan & Charlton.

Chesham at home to Lincoln is a lot more attractive than last season was (home to Maidstone), but not appealing enough for me to miss our defeat to Sunderland! WW, Reading or Brum would have given me a hard choice.

Victory would guarantee Chesham £98k in prize money & defeat over £33k. Rangers will receive £25k for losing in the third round!

I went to Chesham, first time visit actually. Was great!
Hoping that 1st round match isn't Saturday at 3 so I can head over again!

And the TV picks for the first round include Birmingham and Wrexham .
Getting on my nerves all the hype about two sides that until recently were unknown on the other side of the pond.

The Wrexham one annoys me, but Ii can't argue against Birmingham away to a non-league club.

Monday night at 7.45pm!

I've already been given permission to go to football on the Saturday & Monday & now waiting for the tickets to go on sale. I will have to drive rather than train as I don't think I could make the last train from Liverpool Street to Ipswich!

You could always drive to Colchester Terry. The last train back is a lot later.

An inevitable pick but duller with Sutton only just being relegated. Bwood v Orient or Southend v Charlton are more ‘magic’-worthy. The Wrexham pick is just pathetic.

That's a thought Phil. I'll be going with my friend who lives in Witham, so I will need to look at the last times for there.

Actually, I've just seen that it is 19.15 kick off & so going by train might be back as an option.

I think I might have to give Middlesbrough on the Tuesday a miss though!

The Tv picks are not about magic, they are about getting as many people as possible to watch it and Wrexham will get more viewers than those other games especially when you have Spurs v Villa and Man Utd v Chelsea on sky that day.

Also is it not more magical for those games to be at 3pm on a Saturday?

I get why but it’s a shame. I think there’s an element of ‘magic’ in upsets being televised. Even worse now they move half the games to Sunday for no good reason as they have with Bwood.
