Football rules when we were kids.
1. - The fatty was always the goalkeeper
2. - The game ended when everyone was tired
3. - Even if the score was 20-0 whoever scored last won.
4. - No referee.
5. - Give a foul only if it was very clear or someone started to cry.
6. - There was no such thing as offside
7. - If the owner of the ball got angry, the match was over.
8. - The two best players couldn't be on the same team and they knew that too.
9. - If you were chosen last, it was a big humiliation, it meant nobody wanted you.
10. - you even played 2-3 hours in a row.
11. - The match was stopped when an elderly man passed by
12. - Neighbourhood players were enemies forever.
13. - Those who had no idea about football remained reserves or at maximum defenders.
14. - When the big ones were playing, you had to leave the field without protesting.
15. -There was always a neighbour who wouldn’t let you play and threatened you to take the ball and put it inside.
16. - If there was a bet, the game was very serious as if it were a final.
17. - The goals were two rocks or two jackets, but there was always a team with the smaller goal.
18. - When the goalkeeper was pushed, the goal was invalid.
19. - The rules were established before the match even started.
20. - If it was a penalty, remove the fat one and the best one goalkeeper would appear.

We used to chant against the wall for football. Then pick the teams. I was always Captain as I was the best in the school, I’d then pick the worst players for my team to make it more exciting. Being a Saint I always liked being the underdog.

We used to play football and cricket on Peartree Green. Cars had to slow down all the time so they didn’t hit the ball.
How we never damaged any cars with a cricket ball I will never know.

If you were playing at the Veracity, the challenge was finding a patch of grass to play that didn’t have dogsh*t on it.

Happy happy days.

- try to avoid sliding tackles where the dogshit was
- hardly ever pass it, just dribble it or thump it as hard as you can
- if you score, do the windmill arm Mick Channon celebration

In the 70’s we had a local bicycle repair shop that also sold some sports goods. They had the cheapest 32 panel balls available anywhere, problem was they were made in India and although dirt cheap were rarely properly round. Spent many hours playing in our local park in games with mates with a ball with a mind of its own - lost count of the air kicks in front of goal or rolled back passes that suddenly jumped up over the kneeling keeper’s shoulder (think Tim Flowers in goal at Blackburn). Hilarious at times - it was almost a disappointment if someone turned up with a decent Mitre football ⚽️ 🙂

Who played with a punctured ball?

I still suffer headaches from heading those heavy leather balls which got heavier as they got wetter
If you catch that lace on your forehead you played the rest of the game with a very sore head.

I remember reading a book on Stanley Matthews, the Blackpool centre forward Stan Mortensen used to say he liked playing with Mathews because he always made sure the lace was on the other side of the ball from that which Mortensen was heading when he crossed it to him

When the mower cut the long grass on the playing field, you all had to kick the grass back to make a clear are for the pitch. It could sometimes be a small pitch if there weren’t many of you. Then you used grass mounds for the goalposts, and goal celebrations involved diving through the goalposts.

Sides would vary during the game as players were swapped to make it more even.

Running goalies.

I think we called them "Rush Goalies".
