5 Things About Saturday 09:44 - Dec 4 with 1351 views | SaintNick | 1. It was good to see some of the players who have come in for stick from the fans over the last year or so doing well, Manning, Bazunu, even Aribo & Mara 2. I really don't know how we didn't get 6 in this game 3. Cardiff fans were apparently out for a bit of trouble, although I didn't see any. 4. We are actually becoming a very good and well drilled side 5. We won missing some key players from the squad

5 Things About Saturday on 10:14 - Dec 4 with 1294 views | PatfromPoole | A long way to go, but the top 4 teams are starting to pull away from the rest. We seem to play at a faster pace with Shea Charles in the team instead of Smallbone; It does make us a lot harder to play against. I have modified my end of season prediction from 17th to 4th, with a date against Leeds or Ipswich at Wembley at the end of May. Hopefully Ipswich.

5 Things About Saturday on 10:22 - Dec 4 with 1276 views | saintwizzler | It’s very simple. You do well you don’t get stick. Everyone played well on Saturday. Long may it continue. 100% effort, 100% of the time. That is the minimum requirement of the players. A settled team is a lorra lorra fun too. 1 or 2 changes at most. Something the last three managers seemed to have difficulty doing. A Centre Back pairing is bearing fruit under the guidance of Colin The Calderwood. I havent actually bigged him up, I have just tried to be fair to him when he was getting unfair abuse from some quarters, I agree with saintwizzler you play well you don't get stick, you don't play well you should get criticism, but not personal abuse. What has usually riled me up to defend Manning is standing in front of people at games (This is certainly not you Pat) whose only form of encouragement to the team is screaming "You are f****** S*** Manning" just because he has conceded a throw in.

As with Mara, I would very much like Manning to succeed. We may well be reliant on both of them through this season. I will always be supportive of the team at the ground. When I have had time to reflect, (and let's face it where is there a more refined forum for reflection??) I then tend to provide my critique. If Manning can keep up his level of performance from Saturday, he shouldn't be getting criticism from anybody.

We do have an exceptional amount of bellends that love abusing our own players during games though. They seem unable to watch without having a scapegoat to vent their frustrations at and this seasons whipping boy is definitely Manning.

As Manning made the 22-23 Team of the Season, everyone had high expectations of him and was looking forward to assists and goals, as well as being solid defensively. His Saints career didn't get off to the best of starts, as he bore the brunt of the criticism for the goal conceded away to Plymouth when he slipped over and it was his error that presented Norwich with their 4th goal in the 4-4 draw at SMS. Fans then started to ask why we had sent Perraud out on loan, as he would be great in this league etc, so in some fans' eyes, Manning was already a worse player and was the 'Teacher's Pet' as he had previously worked with RM, so the haters had an immediate target. Personally and as an ex-Left Back that reached such playing heights as the Basingstoke Sunday League (Div 1 out of 7) and 2 different Veterans Leagues, I think he is still finding his feet in the team and it's playing style, but there is a player in there and he is slowly improving. The Cardiff game was certainly one of his best performances for Saints. He gets up and down quite well, but is often exposed. This is partly due to the lack of defensive cover from his left or holding midfielder, but we can say the same for KWP - but as KWP is a crowd favourite, he usually escapes criticism (even when he gifted Birmingham their goal the other week). What I don't like about Manning is that he often drifts into the centre of defence when we are defending in numbers. I doubt he is told to do this, as it leaves our left back channel completely free and we have presented the opposition with good chances in the last 2 home games from this area. I mentioned the Bristol City one on a different thread, but the Cardiff one came close to Half Time. Manning went out to cut out the cross, failed to track his man who then 2 passes later, actually provided the cross, but instead he dropped back into the centre and actually flicked the ball on to the Cardiff player at the back post, who put it over the bar. A close call and could have changed the game if it had gone in. I am sure they are working on positioning in training, along with all the other passing routines, so it will come good in the end. It is just frustrating that as a team, we seem to present the opposition with so many chances from unforced and unnecessary errors. A few people who sit close to me do actually want certain players to fail, so that they are either dropped next time, or replaced with 'better' subs. Manning fits into this category and like you heard Nick, people were shouting to get Bree on. Similarly, the same has been said this season about Mara, Smallbone and pretty much anyone who passes it backwards, or slows down our play !! I am sure most teams have a Scapegoat. Saints certainly have had plenty over the years - but perhaps that is for another thread ?

Has Manning had personal abuse on here then? I am pleased that he can get through a game without a disastrous gaff, and like others, hope that it continues in this vein.
