Colchester to achieve league survival today against beached Sutton team 12:49 - Apr 22 with 4349 views | durham_exile | Let’s keep this simple, a Colchester victory today over Sutton (who are already on the beach) means that whatever else happens we retain our League status. However, Sutton have won their last 6 successive games against the U’s since 1991. Last season we couldn’t lay a glove on them, so something has to change. Matt Gray’s side have long given up their outside chance of the play offs and are purely playing for pride. Mid table obscurity beckons. He of course has Craig Eastmond and Luke Gambin in his squad though whether either plays today is debatable. BG in contrast is now unbeaten in 7 games and has started to make the team difficult to beat. No one will be happier than me if my initial reservations about him prove to be unfounded. The team surely has to be as follows given the recent successes. Smith Chambers Kelleher Hall Tchamadeu Ashley Read Wood Chilvers Akinde Tovide Subs O’Hara Greenidge Newby Jay Miranda Fevrier Kazeem Scoreline 3-0 to the Super U’s More than anything I want to see Tom Smith keep a fourth successive clean sheet. We also want to send Junior Tchamadeu to the Grosvenor Hotel on Sunday for the League Two Young Player of the Year Award buoyed by another victory. Weather today will be 13 degrees Celsius cloudy and dry at the JCS. The other league two game of the day is Hartlepool v Crawley at Victoria Park where a Crawley win virtually relegates the Monkey Hangers. With (MK Dons, Oxford) or Cambridge, Morecambe, Accrington and Forest Green likely to be relegated from League One, I am torn as to the Monkey Hangers staying up. Next season trips to Morecambe and Accrington are back on with Wrexham and Notts County so do I favour Crawley or Hartlepool leaving the league with Rochdale. We will know more by 4.55pm. League Table: Wimbledon 43 47 -7 COL U 43 46 -7 Harrogate 42 45 -9 Crawley 43 42 -24 Hartlepool 43 39 -26 Rochdale 32 34 -26 Lets hope for a decent crowd today, get behind the U’s and let’s get those three points so that Doncaster and Mansfield become opportunities to show what we can do when under no pressure. Enjoy the game. Up the U’s

I agree Kemp would be a good signing, but he is only on loan at Hartlepool. He signed a permanent deal at MK Dons in January 2022, so would probably require a fee to get him.

If he can add goals to his game he will become a very valuable asset indeed.

The Crewe game was the first time we'd scored four at home in the league since beating Crewe 6-0 in August 2018. In the 2016-17 season we scored four goals in three matches but none of these were consecutively. In the 2006-07 season, the first one in the Championship, we scored four in three home games and five in one (Parkinson will remember that one) but again none of these were consecutively. I've gone back to the 2003-04 season and haven't yet found two consecutive home games where we've scored four or more. It must've happened at some point you would think though.

The last consecutive home pair prior to this weekend was 26th September 1995 (Torquay Utd 5-2 in the EFL Trophy) and 7th October 1995 (Hartlepool 4-1 in the league) under Steve Wignall. Our record is five under Jimmy Allen, from 19th February to 12th March 1949 - beating Bath City 4-0, Merthyr Tydfil 5-2, Chingford Town 4-0, Tunbridge Wells Rangers 4-0 and Exeter City Reserves 4-2

League games only, plumping for April 1986 , beat Preston 4-0 followed by Peterborough 5-0 . A hat-trick in each game, one for Tom, other for brother Tony English !

Got my ticket this morning - Chris in the ticket office (another unsung Col U hero) reckoned about 250-300 sold so far, and anticipated at least another 150 or so before sales close on Friday. With walk-ups on the day, should be a decent crowd.

Apologies, hadn't clocked the league games requirement. That's actually a 3, because under Cyril Lea the U's won the previous home fixture 4-0 against Orient (as they were at the time) on 8th April 1986 - his last game before Mike Walker took over.

Very good Wessex, but wasn’t it a Sutton Hoodoo until last Saturday? They were always a bogie team until this latest encounter. Am now going to Doncaster and Mansfield (no cricket, so for once able to see out footie season). See you all there!
